Future of PNG fonts

On the one hand, we want to retire them, ideally pushing them into an extension.

On the other hand, I'm wondering if we could move them to something along the lines of the SVG output by using data-uri's. That could even be used as an SVG fallback on IE8 and Android 2.3, http://caniuse.com/#feat=datauri
