Unexpected spaces

Issue Summary

I have been seeing unexpected, unwanted extra spaces all over the place in our test files. Something tells me this is somehow related to LaTeX and is acting as-designed, but when you have a chance, please take a glance at my attachment and let me know. For all of these examples, I was expecting them to be closed up. With the same MathML, they're closed up in our PDFs anyhow.
