What will happen in your session?

What if you could step into someone else's shoes? Experience the world from their vantage point. Take a tour of their history, their neighborhood, their dreams or aspirations. With WebVR technology, this is not only possible for anyone to do, it’s possible for anyone to create. Participants in our session will assemble virtual representations of the world as they see it to spread cultural competency, build empathy and generally blow other people’s minds. They will use Glitch and AFram to build or remix a VR tour to share with friends, neighbors or strangers. Participants will learn how organizations like E4 Youth do this with their community of young learners and how to bring the experience home to their own communities.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

This hands on workshop will provide a framework for anyone to host VR/Immersive storytelling events where participants explore the histories of their own neighborhoods and an entry level WebVR experience to build their own proficiency. Via case studies of past projects, we'll share the open source tools, specs and steps for Remixing VR using only a web browser. Participants will learn 1) approaches to leveraging web browser based VR/Immersive media creation tools, 2) how to access open source and low cost tools to create VR/Immersive media projects, and 3) strategies for creating communities of practice that integrate the arts, sciences and technology.
