Promoting Web Literacy Among Kenyan Adults

[ UUID ] 194dfd4c-6239-4e9a-8f8d-e0ee65a9f07e

[ Session Name ] Promoting Web Literacy Among Kenyan Adults [ Primary Space ] Web Literacy [ Secondary Space ] Digital Inclusion

[ Submitter's Name ] Chao Mbogo [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Kenya

What will happen in your session?

Data from a study [1] that was conducted in Kenya, as part of Techwomen Fellowship at Mozilla, indicated that even though most Kenyan adults know how to navigate the web, a majority are concerned about their safety and privacy online. However, most Internet users do not protect themselves online. Also, the data revealed that more Kenyan women than men are concerned about being judged online or sharing content. The session will begin by highlighting the results from the study, and then participants will break into groups to discuss how they protect themselves online (tools and techniques), causes of gender differences in online safety, as well as what an awareness package for Kenyan adults would look like.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The first outcome is to generate a collection of ideas about effective (as per participants' views) tools and techniques that Internet users can use to protect themselves online. The second outcome is to highlight the causes of gender differences in concerns for online safety in order to better inform protection strategies for marginalized groups. The third outcome would be to collect ideas on how an awareness kit/package would contain that could later be used to spread awareness among Kenyan adults on how to protect themselves online.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.
