[ Session Name ] How can we include open source tools and their ethos for young people inside or outside the education system? [ Primary Space ] Youth Zone [ Secondary Space ] Digital Inclusion

[ Submitter's Name ] Eriol Fox [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Ushahidi [ Submitter's GitHub ] @erioldoesdesign

What will happen in your session?

Discussion on the perceived barriers to bringing open source tool learning to schools is starting with questions like: How does open source currently play a part in the formal UK curriculum? How can we get educators/teachers (all subjects) using open source tech in the teaching resources? What are relevant formats for young people today? What are the key issues and need from young people and those that care for them? Individuals or groups will then take an issue to explore using a participatory design workshop format which could include: Brainstorming, sketching, using 'off the shelf tools', writing, branching code, feedback on existing tools and how they can be improved/built upon. Demo of Ushahidi projects that focus on young people.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

A series of artefacts, structures, frameworks, recommendations and ideas to promote to educators to take forward into their own spaces that are built focussed around empowering young people to engage with open source/crowd source tech. The beginnings of tangible projects the aim to address the concerns raised in the discussion session.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.
