Combating online distraction and addiction

[ UUID ] 0fac7895-a1ef-4a79-afb4-36625124b09e

[ Session Name ] Combating online distraction and addiction [ Primary Space ] Web Literacy

[ Submitter's Name ] Justin Emery [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] https://mindful.technology/ [ Submitter's GitHub ] @polarisation

What will happen in your session?

We will be discussing the problem of distracting and addicting websites and apps, and looking at techniques or tools that help us have a more focused and deliberate online experience.

Following a short introduction we will share our own personal experiences of being distracted or "hooked" by websites and apps.

We will then break into groups (depending on the number of attendees) to generate ideas to tackle this problem. Examples could include installing an ad blocker, monitoring phone usage with an app, a digital detox, better business models, etc. Finally we will come back together to share our best ideas with the full group.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Participants will better understand the real costs (to their time and attention) of using many websites and apps which are free to access. They will understand that they can make choices which allow them to be less distracted and more "mindful" or focused in their use of technology, so that their behaviour which using smartphones and other devices better matches their intentions. They will be aware of tools and techniques to help with this and be prepared to try them out.

I hope we will generate some new ideas to explore through further collaboration following the session.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.
