Area map links not found during crawling?

I had noticed some odd crawler results (i.e. missing links that very much were there) and came to find out from the page source that the links were within an area map configuration.

I can't think of any reason other than this to explain why those failed to be crawled versus other links on the page which were fine.

Have you tested against area hrefs with the crawler before? And yes, I am as surprised as you that people still do this :)
