These things existed in the United States well before the patriot act. I cashed a check at one in Las Cruces NM while driving across the country in 95’, for example.
I am not defending the patriot act, here; I think it is very important not to assign blame for things all Willy-nilly, though, and the spread of payday loans had way more to do with the steady degradation of working class incomes than any specific legislation.
These predators used to be seen mostly in poor urban neighborhoods, but flat incomes and rising expenses have allowed them to flourish everywhere. State laws play a role as well, I am sure.

It is and China isn't even being diplomatic about it either.
>Neal Dunn, a Republican from Florida, asked with similar bluntness whether ByteDance has “spied on American citizens” – a question that came amid reports the company accessed journalists’ information in an attempt to identify which employees were leaking information. Chew responded that “spying is not the right way to describe it”.

Seems like they were digging into something that the Chinese would rather not have broadcast. It's pretty hard to do due diligence in China, as so much of the economy is cloaked in lies and the entire system is a grift.

75 deaths per 100,000 people versus 452 for the US? They handled the pandemic much better than we did

We'll, let's begin with Saudi Arabia, and then we can continue down the list.
But the point here is that Cuba is under embargo, not just some economic sanctions, which means that their economy is severely isolated from the rest of the world. Their government may be garbage, but no government anywhere could have made a significant difference in a situation like this.

Where else do you think we should put sanctions for human rights violations?

This is bullshit, if that was the case, the US would have embargoed half the world today.

I’ll read up on it. I’m a political scientist but will admit have not studied that specific period extensively.

It lasted 3 years. There are plenty of accounts of the situation there if you are interested in the history.

Didn’t Catalonia last for like 4 months under that economic system? I’m skeptical because I’ve never seen an example of a strictly socialist economy working. Mixed economies, sure, but not full blown socialist.

Why wouldn’t we put economic repercussions on a regime that practices horrible human rights violations?

Yea, from what I've been reading online the US dollar is about to be replaced with the Chinese yuan.
