I bitch about DC like it’s a part time job (I’m a reluctant transplant from Texas). But now that you mention it… the routine-type city services actually are amazing here. And the roads! The layout is pure chaos, but the lack of potholes is incredible. Credit where it’s due, I suppose.

I live there and like it a lot. It's best enjoyed on a summer day when families of all creeds and characters can be seen taking their kids to the water fountains to jump and play around in.

During the winter, like most of DC, foot traffic dissipates about as soon as it starts getting dark. It certainly feels a bit weird / almost eerily silent when you're walking through a major, glamorous downtown area and there aren't many fellow pedestrians, but that's all of downtown DC.

Moreover, you have to consider that it's a 100% improvement to what used to be there, as others have pointed out. It's also close to Capital One Arena, a lot of great sports bars and has awesome metro/bus access with Gallery Place & Metro Center both very close.

Haha I probably spend more money on restaurants than 99% of the residents here. My own money too, not expense account. I dined at Paul Bocuse last year. My favorite overall restaurant in DC is Marcels for food alone.

The restaurants here are ok. Largely overpriced and concept over substance. A good example of how DCs restaurants are not as good as comparing a place like Le Bernadin in NYC to well any restaurant in the city for price ambiance and food.

You can say well there Little Inn. That place is a nearly an hour away from city. It's literally the same distance as Baltimore and you want to tell me that's a DC restaurant?

Did a big renovation a few years ago and this was really tough. Called a few places that had good reviews online but the prices were either crazy high or the contractor ghosted after quoting.

Ended up finding my contractor via word of mouth and he is awesome - happy to recommend and share some photos via DM if you're looking for recs.

Grew up in Loudoun County, VA. Can confirm, rich prep school kids from DC / Great Falls are indeed the snottiest kids in America.

That's why when I heard that Brett Kavanaugh went to Georgetown Prep, it literally all clicked for me. Of course he did all of that shit and thought it was funny, that's classic Prep behavior.

Some grow out of it, some become Brett Kavanaugh.

It's a scam. Call the apartment building/manager itself and ask if they are renting. I checked into a similar situation once for a friend, and discovered that the scammer was trying to rent out some unknowing person's apartment - she had no idea!

I don’t disagree with you that there are very concentrated areas especially of loosely organized crime related gun homicides. But the net of shootings and car jackings is relatively wide. Wards 1 2 and 4 also see an increasing amount of homicides. Theres only a handful of neighborhoods where crime is nearly absent in DC (thinking crestwood, palisades, kalorama). Sure brightwood and petworth are less deadly areas then past the river, but they aren’t safe in the everyday sense. Like when I lived in Boston and Philadelphia, serious violent crime just didn’t really happen often in most places. It was very highly concentrated in a few areas. The absolute numbers are more important I think then relative numbers when they are this high

Even then, I’ve heard of scammers picking up the key for a self-tour, posing as the landlord, and turning around to accept applications. Hard to suss that out, even in person!

~$400/mo for one, but I'm a god damn trash panda. I very rarely eat out, and when I go out I usually eat at home first and then just get drinks. I can't justify restaurant prices anymore.

One trick - I've saved money eating out by pre-calculating prices. Like "oh, I can spare $12 for a chicken sandwich! But let's see... fries aren't included, so that an extra $5, then there's 10% tax, 20% service fee, service fees (unlike regular tips) are taxed, so $22.44... never mind"

I do have an uncompromising addiction to fat-free Reddi Whip whipped cream, which is about $50-60/mo of the grocery bill. I could get it for about $5/lb in 2021, and is now ~$11/lb.
