We (two people) spend maybe $600/month maybe $700 at most and eat pretty large meals. When we eat meat, it’s usually chicken or fish and we buy it at costco and keep it frozen until we need it. Most of the groceries we buy at the store are fresh produce or dairy/eggs/oat milk. We very rarely buy steaks, frozen foods, and prepared foods from the grocery store (except rotisserie chicken).

We usually plan out 2 meals a week that will last 2-3 nights each and then eat out or order in 1 night. Planning out meals and eating the same things for a few nights probably helps keep costs low.

This is real simple, use a reputable realtor for apartments in this area. Stay away from ads online, and then you don't have to create an account to ask stupid questions on Reddit.

Man it’s always great to see uppity folks who gentrify a neighborhood then complain about the over priced POS they bought in the middle of the hood… just cause you live across the street now Karen doesn’t mean the anything lol … I guess you all all will replace the McDonald’s with a Starbucks or a gluten free dairy free nut free purple haired waitress place and all will be right with the world lmao

Actually this is something you are absolutely wrong on. It's not widely distributed. In terms of homicides and violent crime it is highly concentrated east of the river and if it's west of the river in Ward 5. But even then its not close to ward 7 and 8.

Petty theft is more widely distributed, but that is the case everywhere.

There is a geographic element in DC. It's not like the entire city is actively dangerous. There is definitely a geographic element to it. It shows up in the data as well.

Crime is absolutely getting worse right now and residents are rightfully concerned, but I remind anyone that when you’re being fed immediate updates about every crime in the city, it leaves a perception that crime is way worse than it is. A carjacking a day sounds like a lot (and is still unacceptable), but there are literally thousands of cars on the streets of DC at any given time. Same for robberies—thousands of people on these streets daily and we might hear about one or two a week. I pretty much never feel unsafe here, but I also adjust my behavior to lower my chances of becoming a victim, as anyone should even if your chances are already low.

We have a scale and weigh things like ground beef. Chicken breast I try to buy the packages that are close in qty and lbs, so I can make it easy, one breast per meal is close to a lbs. We have deli containers and use plastic wrap sometimes so it doesn't take up too much space, but just our normal fridge freezer. We recently moves to a house out of our condo, so we have a basement finally where we store our shelf stable items. I bake all our bread, so we buy flour in bulk 25lbs bags that sit in containers, making loaves as we need.

Edit: Wife will make large batches of freezer meals for quick meal night,s like 4 lbs of bolognese and separate into 1lbs portions that can be a quick 1lbs pasta night. Or make soup dishes that can be poured over rice/quinoa to make it go farther.
