Yes that was my point - tipping is nice but generally not expected. Compare that to the US where 20% is now apparently the bare minimum and you're considered nothing short of a monster if you don't tip (and many people will roast you for even 15-18%, I've seen it happen).

I am hoping that the new initiative will nudge people towards the European model but am afraid it's too ingrained.

EDIT: and again service fee and VAT is rolled into the price. If that burger is €15 on the menu, you pay €15. None of this deceptive adding a service charge, then adding sales tax, then expecting over 20% more on top of all that. You get banged both ways in the US too, the only difference is Germans are at least transparent about it.

The original parent post asked the same thing then deleted their comment. My response remains the same. People need to ask themselves when crime posts like this are productive. If it is to serve as awareness, multiple news outlets including the police auto text reports and even the Nextdoor app have this. If you sit and read crime posts all day you really need to get out and realize that there are people walking around, and just living life without being attacked. There’s a fine line between creating hysteria and just being aware. Lots of commenters on here are living in this state and I sincerely feel bad for them so yeah, posts like this don’t really help. Oh and where did you get that I’m not interested/concerned in crime ? By telling someone to get some air isn’t me implying that I don’t care about crime( I’ve been jumped before by six kids)but there are other things going on in the city. And by the way, I am directly involved in making small impacts in the world. I volunteer with aged out foster kids who might otherwise turn to a life of crime if it weren’t for mentors.

I know! I showed up with my paperwork and was out with in 15 minutes. I had so much free time I ended up going to TJ max next door and wasting money on a cat tree. My cat did not like that and ripped it all up. So the efficient DMV actually cost me money.

Statewide rent stabilization in California is based on 15 years from the date the housing was placed into service, which usually means when the certificate of occupancy was issued. Local cities and counties generally have a similar 1970s date due to a statewide law prohibiting rent control on newer units.

I called 311/911 for various issues and the city responded QUICKLY. Here’s a list:

  1. Our blocks trash was not picked up, the city sent a trash truck a few hours later.
  2. Alley lamp was out behind our house and within the week it was fixed.
  3. Street lamp was out on our block (parts of the block was pitch black), the city fixed the lamp with 24 hours.
  4. Bundy field in Shaw had nearly all of the flood lights out for nigh soccer. Within a reasonable time all of the lights were fixed. Within a year later they upgraded to LED lamps.
  5. Shooting on the corner of Quincy Pl NE and North Capitol last summer, police showed up within 3min?

I did say it was optional in Scandinavia.. and in Germany they bake in and bang you for both a service fee and a VAT, so yeah your leaving a few Euros if you care to is really at your discretion.

My prior comment wasn’t clear: in most EU countries a service fee is included, and leaving extra isn’t necessary; however, if a service fee isn’t included a 5-15% is expected ~ Switzerland on the other hand wants 10% on top of their service fee.
