There was an extremely cold polar vortex this year. When the polar vortex is stable, it stays at the north pole and sucks warm air from the oceans toward the north pole. Hence the warm weather.
When the vortex destabilizes, the extremely cold air leaves the north pole and floods into lower latitudes.
Currently we are experiencing a lull in global warming with temperatures essentially plateauing over the last several years (at the highs). There’s a good chance that 2023 continues that plateauing trend, so the strange winter doesn’t necessarily mean 2023 will set a record for global warmth.

So once you get married you’ll be able to claim (if you want to) your spouses home state of residence. My husband is active duty USCG and he claims FL (no state taxes) as his “home state” of residence. I claim it as well under the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act. We live in DC where I also work and DC taxes come out of my check. Because I’m a FL “resident” when we file (married jointly) I get those DC taxes back. It’s actually pretty easy. He’s been active duty for 19 years and we’ve always filed ourselves with no issues on TurboTax. I’ve worked in every place we’ve been stationed - North Carolina, Guam, DC, Virginia, etc….and I’ve had no issues filing as a FL “resident” military spouse and getting those state taxes back.

Pay attention to the people who brought up IAD customs. Without Global Entry, it will chew up some of your 5 hours. Probably still fine, but at the very least prepare your expectations.

I felt the same way. I think OP just needs to find a cause to support. There are dozens of small protests a year, or other ways to contribute to a greater movement.

I guess that wasn't the right term, but I'm referring to what OP is talking about; attending solely for the sake of voyeurism while having zero actual interest in the purpose of the protest. I'm sure that was the case for some attendees of the events you mentioned but I guess I'm just surprised someone would be so open and unapologetic about something that is pretty obviously gross? idk

Worry not, fellow internet person. We can point you in the right direction
- Arrive at DCA
- exit and follow signs for the Metro station
- buy a SmarTrip card from the machine and load 20 dollars on to it
- enter the station and board the blue line toward Rosslyn (see notes below)
- at Rosslyn, transfer to the silver line toward Ashburn
- arrive at IAD
- keep your SmarTrip card
- (time passes between your trips)
- arrive at IAD
- exit and board silver line toward Largo
- At Rosslyn, transfer to the blue line toward DCA (see notes)
- Arrive at DCA
Notes: there is some maintenance happening through May on some of the rail lines. and then other maintenance on different lines during the summer. When are your trips? Can give you specific trains to board

We have 3,300~ officers currently — in comparison we had 4,000~ officers as recently as 2013, when murders were about half of what they are now. Draw your own conclusions.

If you got married this year you can file all of your income with his state (married filing jointly). It does not matter if you married in January or December of '23. If you already paid/pay DC taxes as part of your paycheck, you will file with DC to get those taxes back. All of the local bases have free tax help or access to a free financial advisor if you're concerned.

Seems like they more want to witness one than participate. I can understand that. When I moved to this area 10 years ago I felt similarly… I’d never seen a mass movement before. Even if you’re not attached to the cause, witnessing a protest can inspire someone to get more involved in fighting for a cause they do care about.

Really? Women’s March, March for Life, hell even January 6 had a bunch of people flying in and staying at hotels. Protest tourism is big and is almost uniquely DC.

Metro. It’ll be more predictable and much cheaper. It’ll be easy, just transfer between Silver and Blue at Rosslyn.

“Lowest number since 1970s blah blah blah” DC population is current 100,000 less than that period so of course the police count would be lower.
DCs issue isn’t that it doesn’t have enough LEOs. It’s that it’s LEOs are shit and the DC Council ties their hands.
The District has more cops per capita than ANY city in the US.
Better yet, that’s doesn’t include the thousands of addition LEOs who have jurisdiction over areas of the District.
The NPS has police jurisdiction over RCP and the National Mall.
The Capitol Police are thousands in number and have jurisdiction over Cap Hill and adjacent neighborhoods.
The Federal Police have responsibility over every Federal building not patrolled by the NPS or Cap Police.
The Transit Police have responsibility over Metro.
These additional agencies total nearly 4,000 additional LEOs. I mean, Jesus. DC has more cops per capita and yet doesn’t have responsibility to patrol 25% of the city land, any of the federal buildings, nor its transit system.

Your Friday afternoon journey from dca to iad should be easy any way you take it but if your morning flight is delayed even just an hour I'd suggest against taking a car/Uber. Reason is the road from dca to the beltway is hov-3 afternoons otherwise consider it an as afternoon toll road and it's not always cheap. $9.25 was the toll for a 3:15pm entry into 66 continuing tonthr dulles toll road (which is not a toll road if you are going to dulles airport) Friday the 24th. Expect it to be much higher as the weather gets better.

Thanks, for 2022 I’m set and agreed - I filed as I normally have. I just don’t want to run afoul switching over in 2023 post marriage and want to make sure I’m totally correct in how I do it.

This year you file your taxes as always with DC because you didn't marry in 2022 the tax year that is currently being filed for. Assuming your Marrying in the upcoming year, the 2023 tax season will be more complicated. You can change your residency to match your spouse's once married, you will want to make sure your employer chages your state withholdings. The next year you would file in DC for the months up until you changed your residency and then the remainder of the year would be filed with the state you changed to. So in 2023 you would have 2 state returns. The year after that would be the first full tax year with your new state and you would only need to file with your new state no longer working about DC.
