I'm certainly not here to discount your feelings... I will say that whatever conference it is has no interest in attendees being victims of crime. If you follow general safety rules, you will be fine.
Safe places to spend your free time include the countless museums, the National Mall, Arlington Cemetery, and if you can make time, the Old Town Alexandria waterfront and/or the Southwest waterfront. I'm not from DC but I've always lived in places that rely a lot on tourism dollars. These cities will often make tourist safety a priority over resident needs. If you can believe the city has a financial interest in keeping you safe, it may help.

Accept what? I've lived in and around DC my entire adult life - went to college here and have worked here. The city is absolutely fine. Frankly, I feel much more uncomfortable going to places in the US where everyone is and has a right to be armed. The parts of DC where you'd be better off not venturing to are places you aren't going to be going to anyway, because they're so far off the beaten path.

This is like the 50th post I’ve seen like this in a week.

I’m happy to share my 2 cents: I am a 30 year old, Deaf, white woman who has lived in what some people consider one of the “less attractive” neighborhoods in DC with 2 young kids.

This week alone I have walked 6+ miles around DC (which isn’t that much considering everything there is to do) BY MYSELF. And absolutely nothing has happened to me. …but how??? Let me tell you kind midwestern OP who watches too much right-wing television…I dressed appropriately for exercise (not to cover my body in shame but so I wouldn’t break an ankle in heels or be too cold). I kept my phone on my person or in my hands so I could check where I was or text/FaceTime a friend if needed. I went home as the day got later…I don’t make a habit of going out alone at night because that’s just #beingawomaninamerica

Now let me tell you about what I saw: I walked to the capitol building, the Supreme Court, the library of Congress, the Hall of fake Presidents, the FDR memorial, the tidal basin.

Today I will be venturing into a busier business area closer to dinner time to see the street art on NOMA and the Signing Starbucks…just for funsies. It might be closer to sunset when I leave Starbucks so I may opt for an Uber…or I might not because it’s not that serious. As long as my phone is on my person and I am dressed appropriately for the weather/exercise…I can do just about anything.

Some things that you might not be used to in the Midwest with little-no neighbors…people sit on their front porch and May talk loudly. People hang out outside of restaurants to smoke or talk loudly. People cross the street (NOT on a crosswalk) and don’t walk particularly fast. People sell drugs and walk around with open liquor bottles in brown paper bags. People might be selling their bodies because they are sex workers…but that’s not my business. So I just keep heading towards my destination and when I get there I’m fine.

First off -- there definitely was a better way to word the title and the whole post.

Second -- Just use common sense. Well-light areas, etc.

Third -- Coming from the midwest, I'd recommend bringing ear plugs it's loud at night compared to the country.

Fourth -- Mind your own business. And don't ask locals about "all the shootings".

Fifth -- for you, just stay in the tourist trap areas. You'll be fine.

It’s fine to ask a question like this, but you don’t seem to be accepting the advice you’re receiving - from actual people who live in DC - that your fears are overblown. I lived in Adams Morgan for 8 years and I was never a victim of violent crime. Go to your convention or don’t, it doesn’t matter to me, but if you ask for advice, be prepared to receive it. Otherwise just stay in Indiana and live out your years there, without having seen your own country, let alone the world.
