I have in-laws who think this way about DC too and I would consider them well-adjusted and educated people. The fact is, DC is used as cannon fodder to prove points on right-wing news shows. And not just Fox--Sinclair owns the majority of local news channels across the country so they are getting these things shoved down their throats in between stories about the local little league team. If you have no experience with DC or live in a more rural area, then you are definitely going to think it's a crime-ridden wasteland. It sucks but it's true.

OP, I'm sorry you have anxiety about traveling to DC. It is highly unlikely that you will be the victim of a crime or even see a crime being committed (unless you count someone jumping over the metro fare turnstiles a serious crime). It's a great city with a lot of cool things to offer and I hope you take the chance to explore it with an open mind. If you are feeling really severe anxiety about visiting, find a conference buddy to do some touristy activities with and take Ubers instead of the metro. I do think you'll find the reality is much less scary than what you've been told by your family.

Start planning your will. No one who ventures into the city makes it out alive.

But seriously, people who live out in the boonies or live sheltered lives always fear monger about the dangers of any city. People told me the same thing about visiting New Orleans, which is a LOT higher on the crime/capita rate. Nothing happened, didn't see anything happen. I did see a lot of people walking around with dogs, children, & grandparents eating beignets and what not. DC is the same and if you are sticking any of the main areas you'll be fine. Don't go venturing out into some sketchy neighborhood, just as you wouldn't anywhere else in the country.

The most you'll probably see is some obnoxious person randomly yelling in the street and drunk millennials loudly enjoying brunch. Pick out one of the many great restaurants, enjoy the free museums, tour the sites a bit. You'll be fine lol

Callahan asks the registered pedofile if he knows what projection means. The guy starts using threatening language then walks off camera.

Why this clip didn’t go viral is beyond me.

And these pervs are coming to D.C. to protest LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈 reading children fun books?

I just can’t with these MFs anymore.

You are way more likely to die in a rural area than an urban one. Urban areas do have a slightly higher risk of death through violent crime, but the reduction in traffic fatalities makes up for that considerably. Also, if you ever do get shot or stabbed, you're really close to 3 level 1 trauma centers and one level 2 trauma center. That will greatly increase your risk of survival. Cities are much better places to get stabbed than rural areas.
