I've lived here a long time and I'm also surprised and scared of the crime here. I also think the comments making fun / laughing at this thread are pretty insensitive.

There are parts of the city I won't go to where I used to.

Don't walk and be staring at your phone. Keep money close to you and put some in your shoe. Leave any jewelry at home. The key is to keep your eyes and ears open.

I used the Center for Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery in Gaithersburg for my dog’s dental surgery, he had to get some high risk teeth out after his regular dental and my vet recommended them. They were very nice, I liked the doc a lot, and everything went very well, but it’s definitely a smaller practice. Certainly closer than Columbia.

don't wander down dark alleys alone at night and you'll be fine. the usual: keep your wits about you, maintain situational awareness, don't plug your earbuds in and crank up the tunes. Stay with other groups of people if you can. Doesn't sound like you'll have a car so no one should carjack you. (And if you were planning on having a car, don't. Parking up there is a bear.)
