I don’t have a ton of love for DC, but I live in a neighorhood that still has sketchy pockets (Petworth) and, compared to other American cities that I’ve lived in, DC feels remarkably safe.

From a logistics pov, what would that look like? A mass text notification would be more of a nuisance, by and large, and a published calendar wouldn't get to everyone. I could see a text service you could sign up for, though

The YRA needs to be repealed. Anyone who commits a violent crime from 18-25 needs to be held fully accountable.

>I sincerely apologize for your experience.
But let me completely invalidate your experience and compare you to the lady who called the cops on a guy for no reason.
A sincere apology would acknowledge your experience and at least give lip service to reassessing store practices. Completely tone deaf and insulting.
Not a place I will shop.

I heard a rumor that GPS services are bad in DC on purpose so that weapons with a GPS tracker can't target effectively

I’ve dogsit for folks through rover for 6 ish years. I’ve dealt with highly reactive/anxious pups. If you spend some time on rover, I’d suggest that route. It’s better than boarding as your dog has some extra needs plus kennel cough and other shit can be avoided this way. Plus your dog can stay in their environment which may help. The cost difference is minimal and totally worth it.

Once again, I’m not saying that there aren’t risks that should be appropriately assessed. Ofc there are. It’s naive to think otherwise.
But if someone’s risk analysis led them from never feeling unsafe in DC a couple years again to constant fear today, that’s not an assessment grounded in reality. That’s just as naive as throwing caution to the wind.
Fwiw, I don’t know anyone who’s been beaten in DC.

Reply to comment by hemlockone in 3 Syllable Street Name Exception?!? by BiscuitMeniscus27
I believe the tree streets were something started in Takoma Park, which was a planned Victorian bedroom community established in 1883.
>In this connection one should also note that the early street names chosen by Gilbert were those of local trees: Tulip, Cedar, Maple, Dogwood. etc.
It was an extension of the "Sylvan Suburb" ideal he wanted to create. Looks like DC took those botanical names and ran with them when the city was extended, at least according to this 1907 map. If I'm reading it right, Aspen St. used to be "Wabash."
The streets are mostly trees but not all (dahlia, fern, and geranium, for example).

Apartments aren’t solving the housing crisis. Build something people can buy, not rent.

Real talk tho - if you hear jets flying over and think "omg another 9/11" rather than "must be a missing man formation" you might want to talk to a therapist.

There isn’t conflicting data on sentencing. The modern studies all say the same thing, and it is logically true - do you know the penalty for grand larceny? Aggravated assault? No, of course you don’t. So how is a long potential sentence a deterrent?
I don’t have an instinct on this, I read the data and see what it says. And the modern studies all say the same thing: harsher penalties do not deter crime.
