It was the only non-Netflix show, along with The Boys, to make Nielsen's annual top 15 streaming list. It's a huge hit for Amazon (as the hated The Terminal List and The Wheel of Time are).

This sub has serious problems accepting that the opinion here is not necessarily validated by real data. Just like twitter, this is a closed bubble. Possibly this comment will disappear with negative votes, but the reality is that it was as or more successful than House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.

No one was more successful than Yellowstone, though (another truth this sub can't stand)

It's Amazon's most watched show ever, but that's not exactly a high bar and the network has been cagey as to its actual numbers. They've spent far too much money into it to cancel it. Unless someone on the inside leaks, we'll likely never know.

Wait for Season 2 and see. Season 1 is a take on an origin story and it sets up Mason, Street, and Drake together by the end of the season. They are aiming for a 'grittier' style that combines hard-boiled detective noir with courtroom procedural. If your dad is willing to watch it with the understanding that this isn't meant to be a replacement but an adaptation in an adjacent genre, he might enjoy it starting straight from Season 2.

There are some big differences like Paul Drake being a black character in the 1930s which will have the new show play out very differently, but based on reviews I think it stays true to the character while finding new nuances to explore rather than just rehashing older material.

You are correct and there is a clear reason for all of what you said: Kripke only planned the series to be 5 seasons. This is why people call the season 5 finale the “original ending”. But with Supernatural being CW’s most successful show, CW wanted the show to continue. Kripke obliged but he also stepped down as showrunner, and other people took over running the show post season 5. So seasons 6-15 is basically just repetitive season arc’s of fan service, whereas seasons 1-5 had a serialized story that all tied together. The only good thing to come out of seasons 6-15 is >!the confirmation that Chuck is God!<, a lot of fans theorized it before, but if the show had ended after season 5 we never would’ve known for sure.

Idk, I can imagine an elf not having too much of a problem swimming long distances.

I didn't really have much issue with the show. I watched maybe six episodes and then kind of forgot about it. I keep meaning to finish it but just haven't been bothered. The thing is, it just never had much of a hook besides being LOTR. The entire time I was... Whelmed. It was just very mid-tier.

Wow I'd never heard of this before but what a fascinating premise! A weird mix of mythical bible story palace intrigue and like Succession-type modern political machinations, even now I think this would be a bold new concept for television to run with. On 2009 network tv? Didn't stand a chance. Shame because there is so much potential in this idea.
