Perhaps I should have been clearer. Microsoft seems to be transitioning to a SaaS payment model. It won't happen all at once. Products like Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) are already moving in that direction.
Cloud services are profitable.

Its a matter of taste, personally im Happy with Ubuntu studio 20.04 and XFCE Desktop. You probably only have seen Gnome based Desktop Environments, so maybe you should try another DE like KDE or XFCE or anything else.

There are benefits, no doubt, but personal experience tells me that the risk for a personal computer is more heavily leaning towards anything else happening, with the drive being the only recoverable bit. (This is reflected in how I choose and manage my machine, but may not be reflected in how people in higher theft areas choose and manage their machines. For obvious reasons.)

Safer to say that some of the octogenarians are aware of their own limitations and the slowness of the judicial process when compared to the legislative (such as it is).
I doubt any single member of either chamber could differentiate their ass from a UDP datagram, but so long as they're willing to acknowledge their lack of experience and lean on experts, we should be fine.
Nothing to worry about as long as one party doesn't become explicitly anti-technology and begins taking actual pride in their ignorance while attempting to solve complicated problems with simplistic (re incorrect) folksy wisdom designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I wonder what they will do by 2025, Windows 11 is already Vista 2.0 in the business world, no company is upgrading their computers from 10 to 11, I’m sure they will all just jump to Windows 12, Whenever that is.

But my friend, that's not what is happening.
Canada said pay the news for using their content or stop using their content.
Google agreed to stop using their content.
Now people are mad that Google is not using their content?

But Win11 isn't a paid service, so what are you saying? I haven't paid for Windows at all since Win7. Win10 and 11 have both been basically free upgrades on existing computers, although I have yet to actually upgrade any of mine to 11. I'm holding out as long as I can, plus it's said all my machines don't meet the requirements anyways.
Edit: basically new computers for a while now had their windows licensing tied to the computer itself as long as it wasn't a custom built machine. That license works for newer version upgrades or at least has for me for the last 8 years or so.

The new crop of AI chatbots are so new that they weren't "designed" for anything, they are more like a fortuitous science experiment.
If you recall, this technology has only been around for a couple of years. We'll get around to designing them for things in the near future.

Sort of, the technology didn’t exist to search all phone calls, it’s a little different but yes a percentage of targeted peoples post could be read and phone calls tapped

I'm not saying don't make it available - just have the user turn it on at some point. Then if customers make a bad decision, at least then they'll have made a bad decision and understand why there's now a bigger problem.

As a novice developer, I definitely get where you're coming from. I remember I was doing authentication in a personal project and used passport.js for it. I was pretty surprised when I saw it was maintained by 1 guy. In fact, I had some pretty unique errors dealing with it due to what version of node was installed on my computer, which caused an annoying bug that required me to do a lot of searching through SO (no, chatgpt did not tell me the cause of this error, lol). It got me thinking though... how many NPM packages are people using that are not maintained, or will suffer from maintenance issues or a lack of compatibility in the future?

Maybe you are right, but I don’t want to dwell. A lot of fear out there. I think what we are calling “Ai” now is more like Virtual Intelligence, very close but even the hardware to support sentient intelligence would require quantum computing that uses Qubits.
What I predict is the most likely scenario would be machine learning peaks in our time and we maximize virtual intelligence that the common man considers AI and even the best software is not going to be truly sentient, it will wait on the hardware which no civilian will see for at least 140 years or something like that.
I mean… but my little comment here is just the opinion of a very uneducated man so this is all just my thoughts I’m sharing.
Anyways man, enjoy your weekend.

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be supported till 2025. So you shoud be fine for more than 2 years.
These days new laptop come with new OS installed. So if you buy a new machine then you should get the OS with it.

Reply to Are AI chatbots off the rails or doing just what they were designed to do? by Ssider69
Chatbots like ChatGPT are instructive prototypes with some impressive capabilities - but also some obvious areas for improvement.
They are good at originating content - but they don't know where to stop. If you tell them to write an original essay with citations, they will make up the citations. That's obviously not where we want originality!
I couldn't believe the colossal missteps that Microsoft and Google recently made in revealing versions of their search engines integrated with chatbots. The chatbots are not ready for primetime - a fact that was quickly and garishly illustrated, to the embarrassment of all.
