GPT-4 always takes the same amount of time to output a token. However, multiplication has been proven to take more time than GPT-4 has available. Therefore, an LLM like GPT-4 cannot possibly "grow" the requisite structures required to actually calculate multiplication "instantly". There are probably quite a few more problems like this, which is why chain-of-thought prompting can be so powerful.

You are correct in that chain of thought prompting does work for this. That's because it gives it more time to run an algorithm to get the answer. I'm specifically talking about "instant" multiplication. Yes, GPT-4 can multiply, so long as it runs the algorithm for it manually. We then run into a small hitch because it will eventually hit its context window, but this can be circumvented. Reflexion and similar methods will also help to circumvent this.

As for SIMPLE specific tasks, I really don't think there's any GPT-4 can't do, not with an introspection step, at least.

I'm studying so I don't have time to dissect all of that, so here's GPT-4's take on the matter:

It's certainly fascinating to engage in these thought-provoking discussions, and I appreciate your insights. However, I'd like to challenge you on some points and propose a different line of reasoning.

While the simulation hypothesis is an intriguing concept, I'd like to draw our attention to the principle of Occam's razor, which states that the simplest explanation is often the most likely. This principle could be applied to our current discussion. Instead of positing the existence of higher-dimensional beings and infinitely regressing simulations, we could consider the possibility that our universe is the base reality, operating under the natural laws we are still striving to understand.

That being said, I do recognize the importance of exploring different philosophical perspectives, as they can contribute to our understanding of reality and broaden our intellectual horizons. To that end, I would propose we examine the concept of panpsychism – the idea that consciousness is a fundamental aspect of the universe, akin to space, time, or matter. This approach could potentially offer a fresh perspective on the nature of reality and the relationship between the physical and the mental realms.

One could argue that if consciousness is indeed a fundamental aspect of the universe, the boundary between "simulated" and "real" might become blurred. In a panpsychist universe, every conscious experience, whether arising from a simulation or not, could be considered equally real and significant. This viewpoint could offer a different way to frame the questions we've been discussing.

In conclusion, while I remain somewhat skeptical of the simulation hypothesis, I agree that it's crucial to explore different ideas and theories to deepen our understanding of reality. Let's continue to challenge one another and engage in stimulating discourse, as it ultimately enriches our perspective and contributes to our intellectual growth. By considering various theories, such as panpsychism or even solipsism – the idea that only one's own mind is sure to exist – we can expand our understanding of the nature of reality, consciousness, and the seemingly endless complexities of the universe.

This seems overly optimistic. There is real possibility the global economy will face a severe contraction in the next 40 years. The assumption of economic growth is based primarily on population growth and a sustainable supply of natural resources to support it. The globe may undergo a severe population decline this century when we hit the wall with fossil fuels and food/ water supply, due to a variety of factors, climate change being the largest. Solid chance it’s not just a decline, but a holocaust of famine and disease. We simply cannot continue to populate our planet at the current rate at our current level of technology. AI isn’t going to fix this problem for us.

This is only an issue for insanely large numbers though. GPT-4 already performs a ton of multiplications and additions in every layer of every forward pass. You can overfit a much smaller network for multiplication trained on full numbers as tokens, and a GPT-4 like architecture can learn to multiply full numbers for all practical purposes.

It's true that GPT-4 only does a constant number of operations per input though, and asymptotically, the number of operations required to generate the output will scale by O(n log (n)), where n is proportional to the input length. But this is not why it's failing.

Last week I would have applauded your positivity. Somehow this week I've come to regard the entire human race as mental.(Self included.) That changes things.

Because things aren't going to significantly change. We will always have people we need to help, the poor, the widows, the hungry. And we will always have people grabbing everything they can and others fighting each other.

BUT we will also have with us the innocent, the sincere, the hopeful, the helpful, the encouragers, and everyone in between.

So though I have misgivings about our future, I'm optimistic that there will always be ways I can help out. Hey, I applaud you anyway.

I just want a screen free phone that's basically just Jarvis. Read my texts to me, look shit up for me, keep track of and make appointments for me, give me stock quotes, tell me the news, just don't suck me into an infinite scroll anymore. If I need to see something cast it to a screen in my house. Done with phone screens.

Thank you for taking the time to read through the article and at least consider the perspective.

The creator might not have intended to reinforce stereotypes, but the result of perpetuating can still be as damaging. Hollywood has a long history of objectifying Asian women, and this is particularity egregious case of it. Any stereotypical portray can be justified as coincidence, but I'm just saying we can be better than that.

As for your counter argument. I think if Ava was Asian, that would be fair. But Kyoko is the one that is dehumanized and sacrificed, which I consider to be an invalidation of the counter argument.

I agree. This is how it will happen.

We’ll see if first in famous reality tv folks. Someday soon an influencer or Hollywood star will have enough on video of themselves, and money, that somebody will try it “for” or “on” them (depending on the contract).

I think it’ll take substantial 24/7 logs to create anything better than an “uncanny valley” version of somebody. Which is why it’ll start w actors and famous folks people want to see in more roles or “meet”.

One of the first will be an Elvis AI that manages your Vegas vacation.

To be honest I have no answer for your questions and even if I had, I guess the only way to see christ comes from within. E.g holy ghost.

So thats the thing, I was atheist, despised religion in general, but liked the simulation theory. One day I got into trouble so bad that I kneeled and said, we'll Jesus if you are even listening take me out of this, and he did. Could be all coincidence, but there was like so many coincidences afterwards that I chose to never get back to my old world view. This was like 10 years ago BTW.

So yeah, not claiming christianism is the right thing for everyone, but it is to me and it satisfied a lot of misteries that science brought to me.

The whole concept originated with a Feynman thought experiment about exponential growth. He never posed it as a real thing just if a small thing replicated a lot it would take over a planet in a seemingly short doubling. There are so many environmental factors that would destroy this self replicating system and many of them are physical limitations of reality. Yet throughout the 90s we had sensationalist stories about how grey goo was just around the corner.

I see similar sensationalism about the nature of intelligence and the current growth of AI systems and am just enjoying being alive to witness it. It's going to get so much better in such a short period of time and all the basilisks in the world aren't going to come fill our nightmares.

FTFY.

Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

  • Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.

  • Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

Beep, boop, I'm a bot
