The Matrix is actually the most interesting story to me, because it was never really clear if the AI had any subjectivity or not. I always took the essence of why Neo (the One aka consciousness) is special is because he is more then just a biological machine, he has a soul unlike any machine. In other words Consciousness transcends the physical world - AI can never be anything but a mechanistic product of the physical. That's why the matrix as this simulation that everybody is trapped in is a fantastic metaphor, because that's very much like the "real world"

Don't forget 2001: A Space Odyssey, which features an AI with an ill-considered objective function. Beware, though, it's super-slow-burn -- the idea is that you're supposed to proactively insert yourself into the locales, maybe with a bit of assistance from a mild substance.

Also, The Thirteenth Floor, a simulated-reality story. It's got a lousy tomatometer, but I think it's better than The Matrix, which came out a couple of months earlier. I think a lot of reviewers didn't follow the plot. You've really got to pay attention (or watch it more than once).

Also in the category of simulation stories that got blown away by The Matrix is Existenz. It's directed by Cronenberg, so as you'd expect the tech has a creepy biological quality.

TLDR

The author argues that the scenario of a global conspiracy by the rich to kill off the poor is not feasible. The author lists several reasons why this plan is unlikely to happen, including the fact that rich people are not a collective in-group and are not cooperative team players. Additionally, it is impossible to synchronize their actions perfectly, and there will be infighting, incompetence, and resource drain. The author also points out that rich people are not universally evil and some may have moral compasses and be against mass genocide. Furthermore, executing such a plan would require logistics, production, and storage of massive numbers of killer robots, which would be glaringly obvious. Governments would also have to do nothing, and it is more likely that they would develop and use the technology for their own purposes. Finally, even if the rich did succeed in killing off the poor, they would still have to share the spoils and are likely to turn on each other.

British show Humans about androids is criminally underrated.

Ergo Proxy is an anime about a dystopian future where androids are turning sentient. one of the greatest works of fiction ever full of philosophical insights into what makes us human. I've watched it 3 times and I appreciate and learn more each time. Pino is the best android ever. (do yourself a service and watch in og jp dub to truly enjoy the voice acting)

Time of eve is a poignant yet lighthearted anime that shows how androids and humans will need to learn to co-exist. The story mostly takes place in an underground cafe in Tokyo where people dont know who's an android and who's human to avoid prejudice.

obviously ghost in the shell, movies and series, the grand daddy of it all.

I guess it's a pretty good version of DALL-E 2 but the generated images still look like sharing the DALL-E DNA to me. I think it's far behind Midjourney V5 and maybe even V4. It succeeded pretty well at my five fingers test though.

Given the recent trend with Bing Chat and GPT-4, I'm a little surprised they broke their streak by not underpromising and overdelivering here. Enthusiasts probably won't turn to this one and it'll be more of a gimmick for now.
