I swear I hate people with this attitude. Like you wouldn't be able to build shit even if your life depended on it, but you're too quick to dismiss it like you know everything about it and can build something better yourself.
Also they are quick to downplay it by analysing it at the low level of operation as some sort of argument against it being anything special.
The reality is everything is made up of fundamental low level simple operations, for example, life is ultimately dead molecules interacting chemically and consciousness is ultimately unconscious nerve cells relaying electrical signals, but I don't think you would argue that it makes them less impressive systems.
If anything it's amazing what simple things and processes can give rise as a result of emergency interactions.

People can see it coming now, we’re crossing the tipping point from “vapor ware” to adopted reality. It’s great, shows curiosity is still alive and well.

all my engineering intuition bets against that. but i do get the idea, and i also have a good intuition of what kind of intelligence this kind of approach will give rise to and i'm okay with that. nothing wrong with scaled up LLMs and reinforcement learning. all innovative algorithms are welcome. engineers will keep at it while fancy things distract others.

But there's the possibility we could build specialised top class models and in the future we just keep making them more amd more multimodal and general by adding other models on top of it.
Maybe that's another way to AGI. Narrow AI models/agents strewn together such that the sum is greater than the parts.

I hate to break it to you, but it's already here. Bots have been used to write articles for years, and bots run rampant on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit.
And they're good. Most bots are indistinguishable from a standard user.
And they're only going to get better and cheaper.
It's very easy to control the narrative when you've got an army of bots posting articles, posting comments, etc.

I'll let them be small minded. That's less people affecting the capacity of the systems

I opened this post just to check if anything has been noticing that as well, thought I was going crazy. Those people should go back to r/collapse or something haha. Optimistic as hell about the state of AI, and excited to see where it goes from here.

Yes. Very much so. I like being glad about wonderful inventions, and LLM are one. When people tell me it’s literally nothing (ideally also telling me that neurolinguistics are total BS and providing other weird arguments), I think they might just be afraid of being replaced.

>but I cannot see a future where the reliability of the information we find on the internet is not questioned at every step,
This is already the reality now and has been for a while. If you haven't realized that then you've assuredly been mislead about a lot what you thought was reliable information. Not due to AI necessarily but due to massive disinformation campaigns and just general bullshit that spreads so easily in online echo chambers. AI will just make those all the more effective.
You shouldn't take anything at face value, always question what the source of the information is and whether that source is credible. This is why I get so frustrated by all the random blogs that are posted on this sub with news-like headlines, as if they are from credible news sources. They aren't, they are written by random people whose credibility is completely unknown and spammed on AI subs for click ad revenue. 90% of the time they contain unsubstantiated rumors and hyper-sensationalized, misleading, and/or outright false information. Like the blog article that made the 1 trillion parameter claim. Those of us with a skeptical eye knew it was bs immediately.
And by the way, even if it comes from a credible news agency, then you still have to consider potential bias. Bias is a lot easier to deal with though than straight up fake information.
So basically, yes you need to be vigilant, but not just from AI, but from all sources of information. Doesn't take a large language model to write an article and mislead.

I am not a doomer, but I don't think that it's a certainty that the rich are going to benevolently let AGI trickle down to the middle and lower classes. Let's be honest here, whichever corporation, billionaire, or government develops AGI first is going to have a significant advantage over others that could be used to further enrich themselves and/or gain power that emperors and megalomaniac dictators have only dreamed of. I'm not saying that this scenario is likely, just that the possibility should not be dismissed.

I didn't know it existed until the algorithm started suggesting it to me about a month ago. It suddenly started popping up on my feed and I didn't subscribe to new subreddits or anything.

Started using chatGPT for code problems today, im working on updating an ancient Adobe actionscript app to latest flex. Yeah I know it's a dead tech but no choice. It's all new to me so it's slow going. My main Lang is C#.
chatGPT was crazy helpful, really obscure problems it pointed me in the right direction. Some of its answers were wrong but we got there in the end and lots of progress made.
All it needs is HAL9000s voice. Utterly amazing.

OK, so i was also just thinking this the other day as i was watching my YT shorts. A bunch of videos came up in my feed of pilots having crash landings or near misses, i kept saying "damn how is this not on the news". but some videos seemed a bit... not right, and that's because they were videos of people flying flight simulator and posting them as if they were real. But the only reason i caught on was because of the ATC comms were bad. other than that the graphics were too real, the physics were real, even the small ground traffic was moving around. come to find out its FS22. But it got me thinking, if i can get fooled by a YT short, what else can we get fooled by? is the TV we watch even real? Is biden even alive or did he die of old age? we dont actually know. 20 years ago we could say, "well duh hes alive i just saw him on the TV" but now.. you really dont know if its a deepfake or CGI or anything.
We already have AI rappers and vocal artists, deepfakes are already too good. VR is getting too good.
I think you are definitely right, we are at a crux, and we really don't know what's on the other side.

I got an art piece commissioned by a human being in mid 2021 and posted it to a subreddit the other day. Someone commented and said “this is, without a doubt AI art” I then replied and clarified it wasn’t and then I credited the artist. They then proceeded to tell me I got ripped off because they must’ve used AI to make it and started explaining how certain details were off that were consistent with the models. I then showed them proof (the commission receipt) that I purchased the commission before Dalle-2, Stable Diffusion or Mid-Journey were anywhere near capable of generating something like this. They then called it trash anyway and said Dalle came out in 2021.. even though the original Dalle couldn’t do anything close to the art piece. Some people man…
