No problem. And thanks for the kind words. I did want to say I sort of regret coming on so strongly in reaction to the other posts in this thread. But it’s just so much easier to be skeptical in life than to have hope and to try to see the bigger picture. So sometimes it feels like you have to put up a fight against the gloomy and unimaginative ideas like what many of these other people are presenting.

I really appreciated what you said in your post as well (for example: wanting to give more than you took, and to be a net positive influence in the world). It’s such a breathe of fresh air to read. And much respect to you for standing your ground and having these conversations. One of my weaknesses is that I tend avoid these conversations because it’s hard to protect my own sense of purpose.

Last thing, one of my favorite poems of all time is “Do not go gentle into that good night” by Dylan Thomas. I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but it has always been something that I’ve fallen back on

When did I state "They are superior, because they are superior" my statement was "I seriously doubt it because they are still way superior and they are likely to continue being superior". There is a clear difference, my statement talks about them being superior and that they will also be superior in the future, but I nowhere defend why they are superior because that wasn't my intention with that statement... The key is that the intention of my statement was to inform why they are likely to win the AI race rather than to argue why they are superior.

Very interesting points and perspective, thank you for commenting. I think this is spot on and would love to hear more if would be willing to expand on it: "It's the very limitations of our mind and the way that we frame the world that creates meaning for us, that necessarily separates us from superintelligent agents with faculties far exceeding our own--we find meaning in the human experience."

I'm not sure that was AI. They sequenced the genome of COVID rather quickly, which is a rather small genome. They then picked a protein target and grabbed the RNA for it and then threw that into their mRNA vaccine system that was already developed. I don't think they used much AI in that process.

There is no doubt google is superior, the question is, will Google show their real capability this time? I've read some comments saying that Google might fall behind, but I seriously doubt it because they are still way superior and they are likely to continue being superior, so even if Open AI releases a super AI (GPT-4), all it takes for Google to regain their throne is to release an even more superior AI (I'm pretty sure they have one or several ones). Google is taking its time, the moment they make a serious move we know that's them trying to say, check mate.

I think it's tough to be so granular as to make a prediction based on this trend only 3-4 years out. Various versions of Kurzweil's graph show a number of machines/years below trend. This appears to be particularly true in periods just before a computing paradigm shift. Limits of the silicon transistor suggest that we're due for one of these shifts. Computational power is one of those trends that I feel much more confident making medium-term predictions over short-term. Of course, in your example of exascale supercomputers, all it would really take to get 10 exaFLOPS would be to spend $2.5B to build 5 Aurora's worth of racks, instead of just 1.
