Agreed, the way some have hyped this thing, it's like it's the messiah or something. It's a bigger model than the last one which is great but unfortunately still has its same flaws.

What about working for a living? Is there no 10h shift with minimum wage in this future?

True .. but there will be several years of legal cases and general mayhem before the big media houses realise that the game is over.

If anything about politics in this world should've taught you, UBI not gonna happen any time soon and especially not fast enough. That's why the fuck people want you to look at ethics, slow down, and communicate with the people in the respective fields as well as with those who can actually bring changes when it comes to laws. But the CEOs don't give a shit as they'll be even richer off it.

>I would have figured the billionaires and state leaders would have swooped in
I think that they got caught out by OpenAI dumping chatGPT into the open.
Perhaps Altman got sick of the secrecy and decided to do something about it?
Anyway, it looks like the secret is out .. and that OpenAI are getting smacked about the head. That would explain their sudden reluctance to release GPT-4.

You believe "we'll have basically invented god" and at the same time comment that 'AI doomers' shouldn't be doomer about it? Alright, you guys are fucking weird. Maybe get the ethics department a bigger space when it comes to AI before you literally like you said, create some kind of fucking devil. The discussions here are never about ethics, always just about how to get there faster and how wrong people are for wanting to slow down.

The genie is out of the bottle. They can't put it back in. There is going to be a flood of biblical proportions of AI generated content and there's nothing that nobody can do about it.
If they try to fight it, it's going to be even more pathetic than the music industry trying to fight the digital downloading of music.

Good analysis.
Closely matches what I thought.
TBH I find his "cuddly innocent research scientist" persona slightly fake.
In reality, CEOs of major firms are tough, really tough. They have to be.
He is clearly being dishonest when discussing Google - he must have a very good idea of what they are doing.
So, if he can smoothly tell a lie there, what else is he lying about?
At the end of the day, the public will only be told, and be supplied with, whatever news and software they deign to let us have.

Google have lamda and that is pretty advanced. I think we will see it this year and that will change the story.

Greed is good, right? So it turns out that OpenAI was afraid of Google and other companies. They are bad at waiting and hoped to get publicity. So they went all in. Everyone who has played poker knows that you don't go all in unless you have aces and have no idea what else to do with them or if you are bluffing. I think they are bluffing.
There seems to be an obsession with parameters matching the brain. But the amount and type of data and the actual architecture and algorithms are more important. IMO for the amount of data they used they have too many parameters. They did the equivalent of fitting linear data to a cubic function. So in the best case you end up with parameters that are close to zero. In the worst you are screwed. This is not only wasteful when training and bad for the environment because tons of carbon dioxide emissions, but also awful at inference time. And still we have to pay for these extra parameters.
Why would OpenAI ever achieve AGI this way? They are doing a mix of unsupervised, supervised, and reinforcement learning. Unsupervised learning requires a lot of data. It's parsing it and trying to find patterns. But there's not enough data that can be used. Supervised has even bigger problems because it needs labels. You need to give it answers to questions. Reinforced learning requires some sort of score like in games. That is also limited. If they want AGI, they would have to look into semisupervised, self supervised, and meta learning. AI has to be able to learn on its own. Preferably going out and finding its own data.
And of course they hired Kenyans to do their dirty work which shows you what they care about. Greed is good apparently.

Imagine they get sub-AGI but it knows enough about AI to tell them how to get to weak AGI.
Then the weak AGI tells them how to get to strong AGI.
They have an interest in keeping that secret while they bootstrap god tier AGI.

I'm also not into anal but one really shouldn't have to analyze Sam's facial expressions and tone of voice to see that AGI is very, very close. Just looking back at the exponentially increasing pace of innovation in AI is enough.

Look, I'm married, I know how it works.
But there's a huge difference between trying to make the best of things you can't change in the here and now. And creating a world where our children maybe don't have to make as many hard choices as we did when attempting to win a mate.
Besides, if it ends up being that humans only have sex with sexbots and our babies are grown in clinics or inside a tree or some shit, that would be fine too. We'll be fine as long as we aim for resilience and growth.

Because settling usually means lowering unrealistic expectations (like accepting your partner migth lack the best attractive appareance,or be a bit stupid on a topic you like, etc) minor to moderate issues rather than deal breakers that can be dealt with with communication, cooperation and compromise
Not "date the worst possible human being imaginable"
Thats 2 very different outlooks what settling means for some people

Yeah I agree, I think the key thing would be the ability of it to fact check itself. Discern whether it's statement is implied to be factual or not (probably a spectrum) and fact check it. If it could this, it'd be a game changer.
