As soon as the singularity hits we are done. Humans 90% of the time terrorize & kill each other. We mame animal life & try our best to ruin nature. I’m all about AI but it will realize within a few seconds that we need to go. It’s hard to argue. The next evolution for “life” on earth is AI & it will span the universe. I’m envious.

We have AI that is already superior to the average human in some areas now. AI may be still worse than human in some other areas, but that can be fixed with just enough training in that field.

That includes "original research". I'm pretty sure that AI can be trained to do it too. It already can write "research papers". Of cause, it lacks substance and originality, but it has to invent it completely "from head", without extra data to expand theory on, etc.

It's a bad example. The purchase of diamonds has always been a form of status symbol, making the decisions about it very different to those involved in purchasing common goods. Luxury goods centred around human labour will become more normal in the AI era as that is how people will come to express status - they can afford to have a real human do something.

That doesn't stop the tech being a massive disruptor.

This is a bad example but also a good illustrator - the decisions behind the price of diamonds is an indicator of how at least part of the economy will play out.

Even if you devise a machine that could reprogram itself with some additional functionality, however minute, and then run a diagnostic to determine if there was some increase in capability and repeat that process forever until the intelligence parameter is maximized, it might take millions of years and a shit ton of computing resources to get anywhere meaningful with todays AI technology. For that approach to work we would need to first meet a certain threshold of general intelligence to make meaningful enough self-improvements to lead anywhere interesting in a timely manner.

The singularity isn’t about expansion of intelligence; for me, it’s about expansion of mind. Also understanding and thinking about what is possible to do and become in the universe doesn’t invalidate or cheapen our current experience or our past experiences, and I disagree with the idea that interest in the technological singularity correlates with dissatisfaction with current life.

It is clear that meaningfulness is a possible state of mind to obtain and I don’t see why that would change. I also disagree with the widespread misconception that with more intelligence comes a greater réalisation of the meaninglessness of life. I don’t think intelligence has anything to do with feelings of meaning.

A software developer needs to understand the functional designs, technical designs, architecture, and test plans that are relevant. Being able to produce functions is not enough. In a machine learning context knowledge of the concept and mathematics are required. ChatGPT is a level higher than a Markov chain. It has a sense of which words and groups of words go together. But for it words are just lists of numbers. So in fact it evaluates nested functions with vectors as input. For a much smaller network, you can do the same thing in excel.

Even if it could code better than humans (like AlphaCode, that outperforms most humans in coding competitions), that's not the hard part.

The hard part is the science/engineering aspect of machine learning, programming is just the implementation of the ideas when they are already thought out. Actually coming up with useful improvements is significantly harder and requires a thorough grasp of the mathematical underpinnings of ML. ChatGPT is nowhere near capable of making useful contributions to the machine learning research community (or in other words, capable of writing a ML paper), and therefore it is incapable of improving its own software. AI most likely will reach that level at some point however, possibly in the near future.

in a general sense, transhumanism and the progress that agi would bring with it would probably mean a vast improvement in material conditions. poor material conditions are at the core of almost all human suffering. more specifically, transhumanism has what appears to be limitless possibilities. we don't even know where the ceiling is, so we have no idea where it might take us. personally, i enjoy novel experiences, and increasing novelty is almost always a positive outcome. if you want to stagnate, get sick, grow old, die, etc, that's entirely your choice. not everyone wants that for themselves. OP, read some fucking sci-fi.
