You can get the same oysters next door in the main restaurant though.

I agree that it suck’s Rapp Session hasn’t reopened - they said it was a staffing issue. They couldn’t find enough BOH and FOH staff. And no, I don’t know what they’re paying folks or if it’s competitive.

I think you might need to specify a time frame. Restaurants have been closing since restaurants were invented.

But some that I liked from the early 2000s to now:

RIP Cafe Gutenberg

RIP 4th St Diner

RIP Cafe Ole

RIP Azizas

RIP Pelon's and your voluptuous burritos 🥹

RIP 23rd and Main and mimosa brunch on the patio

RIP Nota Bene

RIP Camden's Dogtown Market

I could go on. So many RIPs...

Poll working again for our second special election in as many months-- this time for residents of the old 9th State Senate District (not the new one! this is very confusing!) to replace now-Representative McClellan for the veto and budget work remaining in the General Assembly this year. The winner will serve for all of eight months or so and immediately have to campaign in the new district, but margins in the Senate are slim and there will probably be some important votes on gubernatorial amendments and such before the GA's work is done.

It's been sleepy as hell so far, unsurprisingly for a serial special election to elect a state legislator to a bare stub of a remnant term, but I'm hoping we see a bit more turnout after folks get off work.

On days I'm NOT doing that, I'm a fan of Libby Hill at sunset this time of year, or taking our sweet doofus of a dog for a decently long hike someplace we can avoid seeing too many other dogs (she loves humans but isn't a fan of most other canines).

My spouse and I like to take a homemade picnic over to Jefferson Park in n warm evening and just sit in the grass. It’s pretty great.

Yeah, I mean I think you could write a book on how the restaurant industry adjusted or failed to during the height of covid

Take your mom to Class and Trash! They go to estate sales and curate this warehouse of fun and amazing stuff to pick through. The owner started pricing things higher about 2 years ago, but you can still haggle.

Hands down some of the most unique stuff you’ll find for presents and projects.

If you’re into Vietnamese food and beer, do Mekong.

For comedy shows, Sandman comedy club (across the street from Rappahanock on Grace if you like oysters!

Feel free to DM me for more — I have a lot of suggestions based on what you and mom are into and happy to help more.

The white flight from Petersburg absolutely happened, almost doubling Colonial Heights’ population, but it was incorporated 6 years before Brown so integration couldn’t have been the only reason for its existence.

Evernest is literally the scum of the earth. We had the front door kicked down after a home invasion and they ignored our calls and emails for months but now wants to charge us $200 a month to renew the lease. They also would try to charge us for regular maintenance requests

As someone’s whose rented forever here, I’ve had good experiences with Thalhimer, not cheap but at least responsive and up to date on fixing things in my experience. Avoid RVA group like the plague. Independent landlords the way to go though.

I live in the Springhill historic district and can confirm that CAR’s inconsistency is the big problem. They allow developers to flout their own plans and do whatever they want, but homeowners have to justify replacing a window. It really is out of hand — it’s like what would happen if you gave the art kids in high school absolute dictatorial power. Their aesthetic opinions become law.

Our neighborhood confirmed that if you can get over 50% of owners to sign a petition you can start removing the old and historic district designation from your neighborhood. Don’t expect city hall to be nice about it though. CAR and their staff are very disrespectful and think our lives are their personal ideaboards.
