I think you may have modeled your life choices after your mother's.

Basically, you can't. This is a choice he is making.

The choice YOU can make is to refuse to go anywhere in the same car with him if he is driving. And if you know he is actively endangering lives on the road, call the cops and give them his plate number.

That's how it is in my marriage. If I had questions about it I would ask my partner and see how they felt. I'm not sure I understand your question.

He probably wanted to take someone else out for NYE and thinks by breaking up with you he’s not cheating.
