My best friend died at 24 from a fluke heart attack. He was in shape and had no prior health issues beyond mild asthma as a kid and needing to wear glasses. He just collapsed one evening, stopped breathing within a few seconds and never regained consciousness.

He didn't do drugs. He wasn't overweight. Hell, he barely drank alcohol. He had never had any kind of heart issue noticed in routine physicals and definitely didn't have any symptoms that set off alarms for him. He certainly didn't do anything nearly as physically taxing as running a fucking marathon.

He died in 2005. I can probably find the fucking prayer card if you'd like.

If anecdotal evidence isn't enough, here is an article written in 2019 discussing a rise in heart attacks among people in their 20s and 30s. This shit has always fucking happened. Even a low incident like like 3-4 per 100k will result in that happening to THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE every year, most of whom are not engaging in incredibly strenuous physical activity like a marathon.

Turn out to oppose RIDOT head Alviti's reappointment (they haven't shoved is date yet they're trying to fly it under the radar in the finance committee).

Get involved with the Providence Streets Coalition maybe?

We could do a big die-in at city hall and try and cyber bully the mayor?

A dramatic letter writing campaign like miracle on 34th Street? I volunteer to dump the letters at city hall.

But IRL call your city councilor and your state reps.

If drivers had been trained to use the Left Foot Braking Method when braking an automatic or electric vehicle, and thus been able to apply the brakes ¾ of a second sooner and stop 30-60 feet shorter and make ‘hit the gas instead of the brake’, IMPOSSIBLE, would these car versus pedestrians/cyclists crashes have even occurred? Why is the GOVERNORS HIGHWAY SAFETY ASSOCIATION (GHSA), the Transportation Research Board (TRB), NHTSA and US DOT opposed to the BTSCRP scientific study that would make this possible? When we went from 2 wheel braking to 4 wheel braking, we had SCIENCE. When we went from mechanical braking to hydraulic braking, disc brakes, etc., we had SCIENCE. Why no SCIENCE to compare driver braking methods? Just Tradition and Testosterone! Note: The simple use of your left foot to brake is NOT, repeat NOT the Left Foot Braking Method. leftfootbraking.org

Truth. He doesn’t get that bike lanes and the scooters actually make the city more desirable for young talent and start-up businesses and help his property values. But how on earth DOESN’T he get that? Kendall Square is one hour north. NYC is a short train ride away. Both have gone full blast with pedestrian infrastructure and have the most expensive real estate in the world…

Probably need to make how property values rise arguments to him.

Certainly he’s one who has benefitted enormously from the spending on the rivers and turning them from an asphalt expanse to a pedestrian friendly series of bridges.

OTOH, a tunnel under Kennedy plaza would likely have the same effect as the Rebello tunnel under Six corners in EP - and kill them.

His dad was wiser.🤷🏼‍♂️

I’m just lamenting that he’s a power broker here. Great he lived in Malta in the 90’s. His views on cities in the year 2023 make him look petty, out of touch, and willfully ignorant. You’re right that smiley needs to listen to him, but hopefully Smiley has the wisdom to take what Paolino says with a grain of salt.

Be that as it may, he is a major broker here, and has a sizable constituency - so I can see Smiley conceding in some areas like this.

He was Clinton’s ambassador to Malta so he gets out - of course at the time he remarked how proud he was to be at the site of where the allies met during WWII (that was Yalta).
