Coming late to the conversation and whoa, guess it depends on neighborhood (because of course it does!) but I gave up driving decades ago and walk everywhere.
I don't even take buses because I just walk. My doctors and my dentist, walkable. Three grocery stores (counting the new Trader Joes), walkable. India Point Park, walkable. As is downtown, RISD museum, Avon theater, Trinity, Performing Arts Center (Broadway shows), Waterfire, the mall, bus and train stations, etc.
I live in the Fox Point neighborhood on the East Side. Dozens of small eateries, cafes, bars, shops -- all I need 🤷♀️

Just recovering from walking my dog at 5AM when it was -9 with wind chill -32 ... at first it didn't seem that bad, so I let him pull me into going a second block.
So far so good ~~ until we headed back facing north and it was so bad it triggered my asthma and I tore off the scarf swaddling my face, choosing frostbite over not being able to breathe.
Yup: sucked. But made it back without frostbite and dog was fine; couldn't understand what my problem was 😆

This. I use S&S because they're a union store. I can afford to vote with my wallet a little, so I do. Stuff that I can get cheaper elsewhere I get elsewhere. I recognize the luck in that, but also like. I thought RI was the cradle of solidarity

Whoa. I remember when they started running Swan Liquors, I think they bought it from previous owners. Back then, Swan was one of the only places in the area you could buy alcohol.

How much you wanna bet we're gonna get a snow storm in mid April? The weather this winter has been ridiculous so I wouldn't doubt it

I haven’t played bughouse in 15-20 years, but I remember it always being awesome. Nowadays, I tend to just play blitz games online, but a local chess group sounds awesome

The businesses didn’t want it. The residents didn’t want it. And it made more sense to have the bike trail be on a less busy, parallel street. But that apparently wasn’t satisfying enough?

I have only been a few times, because I live walking distance to the East Side Pharmacy that is now just a liquor store. The man behind the counter was always super nice. Maybe I’ll stop in this week and do my part to clean shelves.

People do can trade in for extra money, maybe you can connect with some one and at least set aside some recyclables for them.

That’s my only complaint about them. I try to go during the less busy hours but even when it’s busy it’s still worth it because their prices are insanely good.

I’m always open to changing my mind about pretty much anything and I was thanking them for something that changed my mind. Wasn’t trying to be an asshole but I see how I came off that way when I made that slightly trollish comment while half awake last night.

Have you tried shopping at stop and shop lately? I find their prices ridiculously high. There are things I used to get at Walmart when I was there because they were a little cheaper, but if I was already at stop and shop I'd get it anyway and pay a bit more for the convenience. Now Walmart is literally half the price. It's a little nuts.

Thanks for posting. I’ve only been a few times as I have greatly reduced my drinking but they’re within walking distance and I had decent experiences. May have to find an excuse to pop in
