Shits old, and the temperature swings probably mean a different load on the grid as people run other appliances. Also with multiple it was probably a chain reaction to some extent.
I don't think they have any way to monitor transformers remotely, which I guess could be the way to be preventative vs. reactive but that costs money and most companies are allergic to spending.
This speculation brought to you by someone who is totally unqualified but taking an educated guess.

Aren't they also the ones that blast mailers out to the entire neighborhood anytime someone nearby signs up?

This is typical and happens everywhere. One goes and put more strain on the remaining ones.
It happens. They replace them. Power goes back on.

Transformers have a finite life. They all eventually die. This happens everywhere.

Yep. Been in regent square for 4 years and have had my power go out for anywhere from 10 minutes to 24 hours every few months. Looks like my power came back at about 2am this time, so 3-4 hours out.

There is no single cause. Some of the reasons:
Owner retires and children don’t want to take over and can’t find a buyer
Rising rents
Rising costs from distributors
Rising wages /“No one wants to work! /s”
Availability of groceries at stores like Family Dollar, RiteAid, Target. Aldi.
Inability of a corner store to compete with the above on price and or selection

I agree. I think this concept works in a hybrid form. Most travel routes are well maintained, clearly pained and signed. I've been toying with the idea of having automated trucks to do the long distance hauls between checkpoints outside of cities where a driver will pick up the auto truck and take it into the city. Eliminate man hours, and the isolation of cross country truck driving. Drivers can actually have lives. But yeah I've no money or contacts to even start that. My point is, I think the concept is completely viable in a more hybrid model.

Most people think the war is the good fight, de-escalation and triage are bad words.
There's been an inundation of people repeating water fine, pgh is too far away, and ignoring the potential long-term effects of persistent toxins being deposited in the soil that feed the greater Pittsburgh area.
Good luck. We need better independent journalism in the US.

I think we’re making the same points here. When I say “what will it take” I mean to get these places back in areas where they’re needed. Me personally, shopping at places like these because I want to support local businesses won’t make one magically appear on North Ave unfortunately even though there’s a significant need. I still have to get in my car and drive to them. And if it were as simple as patronizing, then there would be places all over the east end where people actively support small businesses not to mention median income and population are high. Like I said above, you had places like Tom Friday’s everywhere at a point no more than 20 years ago. Not just quirky pop ups, high margin junk stores, or specialty places. So that being the case, how do we get back to that point is my question.

Little Tokyo (southside and Mt. Lebo), best sushi anywhere. It's my holy grail and every other place falls to live up to it.

Reply to Tables turn on Allegheny County assessments, as new math favors owners over tax collectors, schools by RadioChris1
I have 3 issues with most of the reporting on this lawsuit.
It doesn't discuss the core issue at hand: properties that do not get sold do not see their assessment change for years. I've owned my house for 20 years and my assessed value went up once, a very small amount. It is less than 1/2 the market value of my house. Until this situation is rectified in some way, this will continue. And nobody wants to vote for that, as no-one wants to see their taxes go up.
It doesn't describe the windfall that the attorneys who brought this lawsuit will see. As this article points out, it is expected that many homeowners will file appeals. Since many homeowners erroneously believe that they need an attorney to file appeals (they don't), there's going to be a lot of work for attorneys that specialize in this area. Those who brought this suit are going to be able to crow about it to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars (at least).
Most of the reporting gleefully paints the county, especially the groups involved in real estate and property assessment, as moustache-twirling cartoon villains, even though the county generally gets the least amount of revenue from an individual's property tax. This offends me as I have several friends that work in these departments. Generally speaking, they are just like everybody else - keeping their heads down, doing the best job they can in the situation, and trying to follow the often non-sensical rules handed down by their superiors. And many of them work in poor environments (have you been in the county office building lately?), work long hours, deal with angry people, and get paid, well, shitty. They don't deserve the name-calling and vitriol that has come out of the court, the attorneys, and the news.
In summary, it's a bad system that won't change until we, the voters, allow it to change. A previous commenter said that Fitzgerald wouldn't change anything because he was afraid the "old people" would vote him out of office. It's not just the old people. It's all of us. Very few people (likely including me) are going to vote for their taxes to go up every year or two (as a re-assessment every year would likely do) just so a new neighbor doesn't get screwed. We put ourselves into this situation, and it's only thru the power of the voting process that we can get out of it.

This doesn't appear to be tree related (probably), but - there's a lot of trees here. Like, a lot. When a storm blows through there's definitely a higher chance of an outage than you might have in the average city.
But besides that I've never really had too much of a problem. With the insane summer temps the last few years there are times when it gets dicey, but not many outages. Nothing like Columbus (Ohio) where they had to do intentional blackouts last year.
