My husband and I just stayed in Tappan Lake. It’s a little over an hour from Pittsburgh and the cabins are new and right across from the lake. We got the mini lodge because they were running a bogo special that’s going on until the end of February. There isn’t a lot to do there but they have a store with food and drinks and the marina is a mile away with a restaurant and bar.

We also love Deep Creek, Hocking Hills (a little over 3 hours), Cook Forest & Treasure Lake.

Ohiopyle. Moraine. McConnell Mill. Depending on where you live, North Park.

Honestly if you haven't been to Ohiopyle it's definitely worth going. About an hour and ten ish out, you can also check out Falling Water or Yough Lake at the same time.

I'd stay in or near the Strip District. It's near the convention center and has a ton of good beer and food options (Cinderlands, Aslin, Helltown). You're also an easy walk across the river if you want to try North Side breweries like ACB or Four Points.

Hot peppers like 2 things: room and sunlight. So I tend to start the seeds in March, move outside (slowly) when things start really warming up (We are zone 6, so that's May) and plant them wherever they will get the most sun.

most people in area are very poor so there is crime. you will hear gunshots. i hear shots cut through the quiet nights and often. i sleep with my window open year round. it’s unfortunate and still shocking to experience. drive around during the day and get a feel for it. most of the folks out here are just going about their lives and are super friendly. you’ll see many abandoned properties (mostly city-owned) that will discourage you. situational awareness is your best friend in economically disadvantaged areas. personally i’m happy in this part of the city because it reminds me of where i grew up and all my neighbors are awesome but it’s definitely not for everyone.

edit: i’ve rented in many neighborhoods over the years. shadyside, oakland, northside, south side, friendship, bloomfield and prefer living in homewood. it’s generally quiet with less of that constant city noise. so many trees so it’s really green and lush all summer. parking is never a problem. super great for bike commuting or just cruising in the sunshine!
