Completely agree. I former colleague's sons attend Haverford and live in CC, and between driving to an outpost for a shuttle pickup and the like, it's about 2.5 hours a day in communing for early middle schoolers. TPS is right around the area for them and is great until you decide what the next move.

I've never seen them that low to NYC, but it's a rule of thumb: if you can plan in advance, you can get best seats for the best prices (or super low). That's how I travel Acela business class, if I know that NYC trip is coming up in a couple of months or so.

I had to travel to NYC recently on a shorter notice (4-5 days or so), depending on time of day those tickets were very affordable as well (I think I paid under $100 total) - just have to leave early/come back later.

I've seen families in Society Hill / Queen Village send their elementary school kids to schools on the Main Line and ... why? It's one thing to do that when your kid is old enough to take Regional Rail back and forth every day (which itself is great for fostering independence), but I can't justify 12 years of it.

I used to be a social worker and was out in every neighborhood taking SEPTA (including north philly) all the time by myself with no issues. I'm a small white lady and obviously out of place so people either could tell I was a social worker or sometimes thought I was L&I. I always felt safe. The worst that would happen to me would be catcalling or old men offering me rides.

Tips? Know where you're going so you don't look super lost. Say a friendly hi if you're passing by people sitting out on their steps.

Is this legal? I would think you would need to have them in Chinese and English, and need a translator to attend also advising and signing off, in front of the notary. (Chinese is not an official language, which is why I think it might have to be done this way.)

Yup, you just have to book ahead. I usually have no problem finding ~$40 round trip between NYC/Philly a week or two out. The price gets better if you can plan further out.

It’s cheap, fast, comfortable, low stress and has some nice views along the way.

If you are traveling to somewhere along the NEC from Philly and aren’t taking Amtrak, you should be! We live along the best train corridor in the US.
