Not moving but frequently working with tenants in Harrowgate, Nicetown-tioga, Strawberry Mansion, etc. My actual job would take a while to explain but I'm in different parts of North Philly almost every day and I'm not from the city at all.
I've heard people say that these areas can get dicey, but are they safe during the day? I typically visit these areas on weekdays between 9am and 4pm and haven't had a problem, but there's always a sense of uneasiness if I'm being honest.
I dress down (jeans and a hoodie), stay off my phone, mind my business, etc. I don't want to be overly-paranoid but I also don't want to be naive. I'm a fairly large guy so perhaps that helps, but any tips? Or am I being nervous for nothing? Thanks!

It's not strictly Cambodian is the concept aspect of it. It seems like the idea and general menu is more a mix of SEA cuisines and dishes.

Used to work in admissions, including with GFS, and the advantage is true at the margins and for private schools with good academics whose profile kinda fit the college. So we were kinda crunchy, and GFS students were a good fit, so if a kid were at the margins we'd take them bc we wanna keep getting GFS kids and they probably know what they're applying to.
But it really made no difference if a kid was clearly over the bar or not, there were other ways of getting in if they were borderline, and we wouldn't lay out for just any old private school.
In short, I would not spend 50k a year from middle school on to "game" the system. Just get your kid to study and they'll be fine.

How do you know it's cheap ? You have no idea what quality of ingredients they are using for these dishes, or how much prep and time it's taking. People don't act like Irwin's is taking a "cheap" cuisine like pasta with sauce and charging 23 a plate for it is extortion. Asian food can cost money too, if you want cheap pho, pho 75 will always be there. This place is trying to do a higher end version obviously.

I live in East Passyunk and absolutely love it! But I’m 35 and about to have a kid. Fishtown seems a lot younger to me. I don’t like it as much personally, but it’s pretty nice. Passyunk is more walkable and better connected to the rest of the city, IMO.

I think I did the data collection and analysis for rerouting traffic during staging/construction like 6 years ago at this point. This project is massive because it touches 95 and people don't realize it.

I know what you mean. BK is still fairly cheap too. But most junk food is. If you want some decent food you gotta put up 15-20 for one meal...it's crazy.

"Tacking on labels is not going to ... help you understand a political candidate,” Gym said. “Understanding who they are and what they have done based on their actual track record on taking on big problems is what actually does".
-Helen Gym on being labeled a Progressive.
Oh, the irony. This coming from a woman who's entire political philosophy is rooted in dividing everyone into groups based on race, gender & sexual preference.

Did going to Catholic school for grades 3 and 4 help you get into college? Would it have if you'd gone through high school? Just not sure I understand the argument that any private school gets you the same level of connections and reputation for college admissions.

What's your budget? Remember that safety is relative and Philly is a bit more block by block compared to other cities. Good neighborhoods to start looking into include Rittenhouse, Fairmount, Graduate Hospital, Washington Square West, Bella Vista East Passyunk, Fishtown, Northern Liberties. There are several more.

I do, while it might be an exception, this Jewish kid was sent to nearby catholic school by his parents for 3 and 4 grade till they moved to a better catchment.

Chiming in to suggest Washington Square West, Society Hill, and Queen Village. We're early 30s with no kids and you basically described us and our neighbors in Wash West.

Amazing news. I went to Montreal last summer and their riverfront was a lot like ours, but it was bustling and mainly because it was easy to walk from the old city to the river. I look forward to this being done!

Philly public school parent here. If your child is safe and the classrooms are reasonably free of distraction, I'm not sure the choice of elementary school matters very much. Kids in good private schools have smaller classrooms and generally nicer facilities, so that's what you're paying for. But kids with supportive and motivated parents are likely going to do fine anywhere (with the above caveats about safety and distraction).
Edited to add that Bache-Martin absolutely qualifies as a perfectly fine place to send your kid.

Center City is generally safe. I'd recommend Rittenhouse Square, Logan Square, Fitler Square, Old City, Washington Square West, and Grad Hospital as the best areas.
