I guess the best decision to save it and put it towards the loans. I just feel anxious about having basically nothing for retirement

Underwriters can not take marital status into consideration in the underwriting process. This is expressly forbidden by both the ECOA and FHA.

Thanks. I have read through the prime directive and I know saving for retirement comes before paying off debts. However, I won’t have an employer sponsored retirement program until I start working. When I do, I will definitely contribute to that enough to get the full match.

I believe she paid a lumpsum and not monthly so its an amount of money she would like back. Do you have a reason why it would be worth keeping if doesn't rent anymore?

Thank you for light at the end of the tunnel, I hate insurance so much, I was always told nobody wins until there is a total loss. Little scared to take that risk...

“Did you call the insurance carrier and ask to cancel your renters insurance?”

I have a high deductible though, so I guess I'd be out the cash until they manage to get the money from the other insurance company?

This is literally why you have your insurance company.
Your insurance company works for you.
Their insurance company doesn't work for you.
It's that simple.

I only talked to her briefly today so I don't have all the details but it sounds like she tried to ensure she went through the process to have it cancelled and re-iterated the question that she wouldn't be charged in the future. Also something about having got a plan that wouldn't auto renew. What questions should I ask her to see if she went through the proper steps?

When you say traditional 403b, is that my existing 403b through my employer? Or a completely separate one I would open through a provider (Vanguard, Fidelity, etc)?

Jeff Bezos once asked Warren Buffett: "You're the second richest guy in the world. Your investment thesis is so simple. Why don't more people just copy you?"
To which Buffett replied, "Because nobody wants to get rich slow."

Screw their insurance.
File the claim with your insurance. That's what you pay then for.
Your insurance will chase their insurance for you.

Because anything can happen between now and the scheduled marriage dates and I’ve seen enough disasters on this sub.
You can easily Google for it.

Thank You.
I forgot to add that her job deducts state taxes, while my job does not deduct state taxes.
Do I have to do the same for all our various investment 1099s? Show 10 months of NJ separately and 2 months of CT?
Edit - Considering that shipping lines don't deduct state taxes, should I still ask for a W-2C from them showing the different addresses? Or can I just submit the W2 that I have with the CT address and manually input the state wise incomes?
Thanks once again for your help.

Renters insurance is less than a Netflix subscription. Personally i would keep it even if she moves back to her parents home

Dispute it on the credit card. The CC company also may have a phone number or email to get in touch with them

Then I would probably spend that extra money on investments (either retirement or educational savings plan) if I were in your shoes.
I’m not familiar with the cost of that stuff in Canada, so I don’t know how much you need, but the S&P 500 historically has averaged ~10% (7% after inflation), so mathematically it likely makes more sense to invest the money instead of paying the car off early.

You've separated emotionally. You need to separate financially.
