Don't dispute/chargeback against Google (or any major data holding companies such as Apple as well).

they have, and will, ban your email account on file. effectively locking you out of everything.

Did you stop paying the bill when the phone wasn't delivered? That was a mistake. The best thing would have been to continue paying the bill until the issue was resolved, and get credit for that later with the company. Now it's going to be a much harder thing to get that credit mark reversed, if it ever even is reversible.

Why is it impacting your credit score? Are you not paying the bill? You need to pay the bill while it's under dispute, not because it's the "right thing to do" but because with google you have little other recourse than to wait it out. Otherwise you're just tanking your credit score. I guess there's no point in paying it now, because the damage has been done.

Your case is a replay of this person's same situation: https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/yunynk/should_i_dispute_a_charge_through_one_of_the/

And DO NOT INITIATE A CHARGEBACK WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD when it comes to Google. They will shut down your accounts, Gmail, etc.

Gotcha, that stinks. I'd recommend you keep trying with Google. Maybe you'll have better luck now that the new product season/holidays are over. It's not like they're withholding your refund intentionally, it's probably just bad customer service.

Lack of rental history may be tough, BUT, you may be able to negotiate with your landlord. Most places require first and last month’s rent as a deposit, so if you fail to pay rent, they at least can take your deposit. If you can show your landlord you have a stable income, plus you pay that deposit, you should be fine.

>Will this scare off landlords and property management groups even if everything else checks out?

Maybe, unless your state includes being homeless or living in a shelter as a protected class for housing, they are free to deny your application for that reason.

>Will they even know it's a homeless shelter since all they'll be given is the address?

Probably. Maybe they won't care to check references or verify where you lived previously, but if they do, they will figure it out.

You are likely going to have a harder time finding housing because of your lack of rental history. Having a letter written that explains that you were homeless, you've taken XYZ steps to stabilize your situation and are now looking for your own housing can help. So can having a positive reference from the shelter or another case manager that you were a good resident, are working on stabilizing your situation, etc. If your community offers "Rent Well" courses or assistance to homeless individuals in finding housing, take advantage of it, they may have programs to educate and incentivize landlords, and supports for you.

I paid for the phone using Google's financing service not my credit card. It's through synchrony bank. But I guess the same thing applies here. I will try to contact them. Is there anyone else to contact to get the late payment/delinquent account off of my credit report?

Are you dealing with the Google Store or Synchrony Bank? Where did you purchase the phone? I had a similar thing happen to me (granted it was a few years ago) and Google was quick to send a replacement device.

How you financed the purchase shouldn't be a factor in how they handle your complaint.

Current college student here. Now where I go to school, the price of dorm (over 9 months + meals) and apartment (over 12 months + some for groceries) is not much different. For me, it was a no-brainer to go for the apartment; I learned how to cook for myself in the span of about 24 hours of not having my parents cook for me, and a few months ago I received a job offer for remote work -- something I most definitely could not have done had I been in a dorm.

I have more space to myself -- something that I enjoy -- and I can cook whatever I want (of course within limits) whenever I want it. And it's healthier than eating Chipotle or whatever every night.
