There is a housing crisis in NYC. You’re going to be affected. It sucks for you. It sucks even more for people that can’t find affordable housing in a city where their family lives and where they grew up. If there is one thing that is constant in this city, it’s change. Every neighborhood changes, and there will always be people that hate that happening.

This right here is the problem. It's not racism, it's money. It's always money. We'll never solve this issue until we stop treating real estate as an investment. Other countries have been successful to combat this

Because both the subways and the bridges/tunnels are operated by MTA, they can use money from one for the other. More toll payments might mean less of a need to raise subway fares.

Was the article only 4 sentences long for anyone else? I thought I was being paywalled or something. I've always been reading elsewhere that the MTA just desperately needs more funding and ridership just hasn't reached pre-pandemic levels to support itself. Something needs to give and I do hope the MTA figures out (with local, state and federal support) how it can continue providing what should be world class services relative to NYC's actual competitors. Albany always dictating so much for NYC also is kinda discouraging to read.

Man, this guy just hustles harder than you, you’re just simply not smart enough to make money off of breaking the law and exploiting others. /s
Hope he spends a long time in jail

The amount of fake plate toll evasion is insane. They could easily recover/fine/impound vehicles if they want to. That’d be more than the extra revenue from any fare hikes

Maybe when the fucking guy that owns msg pays his fucking property tax the mta can take part of the money. The answer to literally every problem in this city is to tax the rich. For fucking fucks sake.

Yes and no. They’re developers. They take financial risk to resurrect neighborhoods. Remember you DID NOT go past Ave A in the early 80s, you just didn’t do that.
Dumbo? Deserted.
Williamsburg? Used to see cars there on fire at 3 AM. Not anymore.
Yes, we all hate developers, some go bankrupt, others build Industry City.
Franklin Avenue, way back when, I saw bodies in the street, another shooting, going to the Deli. Now? It’s hipster central.
A 2 edge sword awaits as they call it.
PS I try to lay low from humans, defer to AI. Much smarter than us. It just is. Life got too complicated, AI seems to do just fine. The more complex and complicated, it loves that kind of stuff. And zero emotional involvement. Not perfect, but sure close.
AI should really take over managing the city. It’s inevitable.
:-)

Even worse these properties are likely LLCs and they’re writing them off as business expense losses come tax time.

Imagine having so much money that you can but extra of a vital resource (housing) and lend it out at a huge profit. It’s like back in the 1800s when some wealthy dick would buy up all the staple food in the port and gouge everyone who needed to eat on resell. Fuck landlords.

The MTA needs money to fund the subways. Part of the way the MTA earns money is from tolls. If they are able to bring in more money from tolls, they do not need to resort to fare hikes to bring in more money. Hope that clears it up.
You are correct that more people using cars does not encourage subway use. However, car users still generate revenue for the MTA.

Imagine being a landlord *so wealthy* that you can afford to 'lose' this much money.
Please. Don't cry for these landlords, they're fucking scum trying to manipulate the market.

I see. I don’t see the correlation between bridge/ tunnel tolls and fare hikes for the subway.

The real reason is that they’re afraid of property values will plummet. not only that parking is already a nightmares and now you put multifamily homes with multiple drivers that’s really gonna congest the block

There are over 80,000 EMPTY apartments in NYC. My landlord bought out my old rental, sealed it up. For years now, has lost over $300,000 in rental income.
They just don’t care. Waiting for the laws to change.
NYC is the center of the world. To get a $700 a month studio is unrealistic. But that seems like a reality to posters on my Facebook feed. Anything more than that? Blame Airbnb.
Just don’t think that’s going to happen.

So i lived in brooklyn which most of the housing was 2 and 3 family housing. You can still have all of what you like aboutnyour neighborhood with more than just single family houses. The buildings in queens are two story two family housing that take approxiamitely the same footprint as a single family house. Nimby people like you expect things to just stay the same which is ridiculious. Maybe we should tear down all the dense housing andbbring ny back to being open land because nothing should change?

Ye I dunno about zoning, but tax wise having an Airbnb doesn’t subject you to any tax exceptions, it’s a business like any other. If you make more than you spend you have to pay income taxes on it

The MTA runs the bridges, tunnels and mass transit systems [entirely within NY state]. They all are paid for out of the same coffers. The MTA can use its money for whichever project they want. It's all the same pockets.
