Yeah , I don’t think anybody would consider midtown dangerous . Some parts around Hell’s Kitchen could be considered a little sketchy at night , but overall I find it safer than most places . Fordham is also not that bad , I guess in certain areas at least. The most surprising part of that article is that somehow East NY is not mentioned lol

Regarding the red-vs.-blue divide, I think it's always relevant to note the cities in red and even very red states are often blue; for instance, while Georgia, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee all voted by a large margin for Trump in 2016, Atlanta, New Orleans, Louisville, Memphis, and Nashville each voted overwhelmingly for Hillary. That's why trying to split the country in some way is an impossibility, as there'd be dozens of blue islands surrounded by hundreds of square miles of red territory, and that certainly goes for New York State.

Oh yeah, I figured, and that's bullshit, but it still seems funny to me that the example in the article is that they found a building that "appears to have undergone a rehab inside and out".

I don't know how the system is designed but it seems pretty easy to set up a points system where "one coat paint" does not mean you can raise rent, but "replaced oven, replaced pre-1950 windows with double-paned windows, replaced leaky 1974 toilet with modern dual flush, replaced water damaged 1983 drywall, AND added one coat of paint" would qualify as substantial improvement.

I followed the renovations of my last building which had routine ceiling cave ins and a very unsafe central staircase.

They did nothing structural.

They made a nice one bedroom into a terrible 2 bedroom with no living room, doubled the rent, and it has turned over every year since, most recently with a rent REDUCTION, meaning no one renews, meaning it's still unsafe.

These landlords are not doing what they claim they are doing.

The rat problem has always existed, but it has gotten significantly worse since covid. I’m on DSNY and the rats have become a big issue. Used to see them here or there, now I see them multiple times a night. They get into the garbage, they make a mess and they carry diseases.

I don’t think this later in the night put out is gonna change anything though. Even if everyone participates and does the right thing, most recycling trucks go out on the midnight shift and rats are less likely to go for recycling bags if there’s garbage next to it. Standard garbage collection trucks are split between the day shift and the 4pm shift. So no matter what you still have garbage potentially sitting on the street for 12 hours anyway.

This solution makes no sense and I don’t think we’ll see any real change.

I went to Amazon Go next to WTC last year and was a great experience.

Went to the store in the morning since I was in hurry and didn't want to go to local bakery due to wait on the line. Took me only less that 4 minutes to pickup what I need. The food quality was similar like getting from airport but overall food was fresh and have no complaints.

I wish we can have this we're I live.
