This is the kind of change that we humans can actually guide and control. It is not an asteroid or earthquake. This is top-down gentrification, not bottom up. It is the result of zoning changes and decisions made largely at the level of local and state government. Same way they encouraged white flight in the other direction during the days of redlining.
Not all change is good. If we just throw up our arms at everything and say "change happens" we aren't taking control of our destiny or protecting what we have.

It just depends on where you are, no? I’m in Manhattan and it can’t be more diverse everywhere.

Do you believe the NYT is objective in its reporting of any other religious movements and/or cults?
Again, we agree that there is child abuse in Hassidic run Yeshivas, correct? It's happening and the NYT is not fabricating that.
Is the NYT required to, say, publish an article about how Jim Jones was a crusader for civil rights and equality among African Americans? Do we have to have a puff piece on Tom Cruise for every article about Scientology's forced labor?

If you mean too many white folk, they seem to stay mostly to the West of Broadway.

I mean, Hispanic are 18% of US population, blacks are 12%. Black people were always over represented in NYC. If anything, it makes sense there are more Hispanics in NY now.

I believe the NYT is not objective in its reporting when it comes to the Hasidic community and has made it a goal to highlight as many social ills as possible within it.

thats not what i've seen. Re bronx. Bronx is a big place. it might not just be in the areas you frequent yet
Also Fort Green projects has a influx of Chinese people who qualified for NYCHA moving in - changing the face of that area for the next couple of decades.
Even knocking the church down in FGP / ingersoll houses

I know this is unpopular but gentrification is what brought lower crime rate, stores, and other amenities into neighborhoods that didn’t have them.
People should see West Chelsea before it was gentrified, it was just warehouses and gas stations.

Ok, but... shouldn't someone be receiving negative attention for abusing children?
Why is it the NYT's job to promote anyone's livestyle? What do you believe the purpose of journalism is in a civil society?

Lol, where?
The only parts of the Bronx with a lot of white people are either wealthier neighborhoods like Riverdale without many minorities, or neighborhoods that are in the process of white flight.

That’s an absurd argument and not at all what I’m saying. I’m saying all this negative attention is careless and unbalanced and the Times rarely highlights positive aspects of the Hasidic lifestyle.

That's not a great example, the black population in the LES mostly lives in the housing projects.
I will give you though, that people of all backgrounds hang out in the LES.

So, your argument is "We should let Jews abuse children, because the extant, physical harm being inflicted upon children is less important than potential antisemitism"?
Have you ever read "The Ones who Walk Away from Omelas" by chance?

Did anyone intimate that there's something intrinsic about Jewishness that requires Yeshivas to abuse the children under their care?

Reply to comment by [deleted] in New York Will Pay Millions to Protesters Violently Corralled by Police by mowotlarx
Were you actually even there? Because what I saw with my own eyes was people driving in cars who then got out and smashed windows and threw things in trucks.
I know that this was NOT the protesters, because we all marched from Roxbury to the common on foot.
I saw all this as I was running through the streets of downtown crossing as police chased us and countless others, spraying pepper spray and assaulting people violently with batons. Literally everyone was trying to leave like they told us to, but police had barricaded and blocked off nearly every street, then they assaulted us.
One officer even bragged about hitting people with his car, before another officer realized his body cam was on and they tried to cover it up.
The protesters were peaceful. Awful people who were not even associated with the protests drove in and caused the vast majority of any damage done to property. The majority of damage done to people was committed by the police against the peaceful protestors. They trapped us and then assaulted us with no cause whatsoever.
Run for your life in the streets when you’ve done nothing wrong, then get back to me with your thoughts.

>You realize that white suburbanites make the exact same comment when minorities or low income folks move into their neighborhoods. . .
No they don’t. Instead they repeatedly call the cops on any perceived offense and refuse to speak directly to their neighbors, similar to how some of these “gentrifiers” treat their neighbors of color that may have been in the neighborhood for decades. That’s not everyone, but it’s a significant number. And that’s what OP was complaining about. He never said they weren’t welcome.
But we all know how a lot of redditors get hard at wanting to paint minorities as “the real racists.”

Going to NYC as a Dutch tourist tomorrow. Since it’s not the usual tourist time I was wondering if there’s anything special I should be aware of? I’ve been there before in 2017 but that was in the summer. Im wondering if the city feels any different now since I’m assuming there aren’t many tourists to visit gift shops and hotdog stands.

My assertion is that the focus is singular and feels malicious. I want yeshivas to teach secular subjects and not abuse their children.
I don’t want them to serve as the example of all that is wrong when antisemitism is running high.

If the Yeshivas are indeed ill, why shouldn't they be reported on? Your assertion isn't that the NYT is making up malfeasance, simply reporting on actual malfeasance that happens, correct?
If so, why is it a bad thing to shine a light on child abuse?

OK. Clearly not the job for you, and no one with those requirements would ever be hired for it. Your personal comfort level isn’t all that relevant—the job necessitates commenting on religious practices. People who take the job take it knowing they may ruffle some feathers. Not everyone is completely conflict-averse.

The legislature is supposed to come up with an enforcement budget when they write law that’s going to mean extra work/personnel.
Ideally.
But if all they’re about is free publicity, they blow that part off and leave it to somebody else to figure out.

Rich white people are the ones who want development. Who do you think is moving into those glass monstrosities?
