I wonder how killable that kind of guy is? Sounds like she should play it safe, act reasonably skeptical but also pretend that she doesn't know nearly as much as she does.

He feeds on people believing him voluntarily, so he needs someone uncontrolled for that purpose. The exact person was pretty much just his choice. Mae was probably more capable of noticing the influence due to her previous supernatural experiences.

I LOVE that she not only wasn’t really married to this man, but she was married to a woman! And the fact that they duplicated, in a way, by the child being altered into her life at the end reminds me of that Rick and Morty episode where parasites put themselves in the families memories.
