My overall point though wasn't that they weren't doing enough to deal with the issue, more that I felt the jokes were in bad taste and didn't buy the justification that they were "raising awareness."

actually it's spelled that way so as not to confuse it with "lead", as in the metal. In the days of lead type, extra space between lines would be added by inserting thin strips of lead. So you could say "Put 4 extra points of lead after the lede".

Never plug random USB sticks into your computer. This is also a common attack vector for malware. I've never seen this used for actual bombs but there are also usb killers that send high voltage to your device and damage it.
