What are they supposed to do? It's likely the person doing it has to come to retrieve the pigeon so it would be easier to catch them.

Maybe not, but they have accounts of some magnitude to process their banking and then the mortgage on the property if not owned outright. There's significant investment there and it can't all be owned outright.

>In December, a pigeon wearing a backpack carrying crystal meth was found in the yard at Pacific Institution. Both pigeons were later released.
They mention in the article that the pigeon will just fly to its home base if they release it... then they just release it. It's STILL a viable smuggler for the prisoners. Hell, there's no way to no if it's actually two pigeons. They may have just caught the same pigeon twice and released it twice. Top security at this prison.

Right now those are the organizations making sure the smaller banks don't fail. So while I agree with your sentiment, now isn't a good time to be going after them.

Ranchers don't typically have a ton of cash in banks. Most of their assets are in the ranch itself. And then investments if they have a lot of excess capital.

I find myself missing the good old days of classic Simpsons more and more. Not only were the townsfolk of Springfield the quickest people in the world to descend into an angry torch-waving mob, they also manage to do so while completely upending a scene from a classic heartwarming movie like It's a Wonderful Life. It's such a humorous kind of misanthropy, heaping scorn on the myths we tell ourselves about the better angels of human nature and sketching a more accurate depiction of the way modern Americans truly act. The Simpsons has become so engrained in modern culture it's easy to forget it was once considered subversive, with the fucking President taking time out of his day to criticize it.
"Hey, what the hell ya doing with my money in ya house, Fred?" * punch *

40s is nearing retirement (from flight status) age for fighters due to the physical toll of flying them. Those statistics make no sense when you consider the cutoff age for flight training is 26.
That salary is wrong too. For Navy pilots it’s $65k on average, but salary is adjusted to the living standards of where you’re stationed, which is going to skew any averages.

Not really, the average age of fighters pilots in the U.S. is 40+.
Fighter pilots in their twenties exist, but it's a really low percentage, 11%.

On the German side it was the U-bootwaffe that had the highest casualty rate 75%. For the US it was the Submarine force, 20%.

Today’s fighter pilots are just as young.

A lot of people say a lot of things these days when it comes to China. But at the end of the day even the US government has not presented any concrete proof as to TikTok’s collaboration with the CCP.
> allowing TikTok would be no different from the US allowing the Soviets to buy NBC during the Cold War.
Well I fundamentally disagree. The US and China are not enemies at the moment and we aren’t even in a Cold War, and the economic ties and relationship between two countries are very different from what the US had with Soviet Union. We have a lot of business interest in them as they do in us. The trade between the two countries just reached all time high: https://www.politico.com/news/2023/02/07/trade-china-relations-economies-00081301
You think there is a fire going on meanwhile even the best evidence brought up by the most staunch anti-China politicians so far is “there could be a fire”.
I personally think this is just the new Red Scare and we are trending toward a new era of McCarthyism. And of course SnapChat and Meta have been funding this whole effort, just look at their stock price in the past few days.
Either way I appreciate your level headed discussion, we may disagree but it’s more pleasant than most discussions I’ve on Reddit when it comes to this topic.

I respect and agree with the argument that we need comprehensive data protection and algorithm transparency laws. That makes sense.
My fundamental disagreement with you is the level of concern about TikTok specifically. The fact is that ByteDance has to, whether willingly or unwillingly, do what the CCP asks. There is evidence of algorithm manipulation. The CCP does have those levers. We’ve seen ByteDance work with the CCP very openly. As Ben Thompson says, China is using their access to push their ideals. And as Matt Yglesias says, allowing TikTok would be no different from the US allowing the Soviets to buy NBC during the Cold War.
For me banning or forcing TikTok to divest is a five alarm fire we have to take care of, while comprehensive user protection laws are the asbestos in the walls of the house next door that probably should’ve been removed a while ago, but not the main concern with the fire going.

I've got a feeling this isn't going to go over well, but you have to put the pigeon down. That's what happens to animals when stupid humans train them to do inappropriate shit or otherwise interfere with their wild existence. There's no chance of us making pigeons extinct from putting down every pigeon that's being used as a drug mule for prisons, I'm quite certain. Otherwise, they're probably not going to catch the pigeon every single time, and drugs are going to get into the prison.
