Flying into Hartford is an easier route. I fly back and forth to LA all the time and use a direct flight from Jet Blue. About a 50 minute drive from Hartford to New Haven.

I had a similar experience recently! If yall are interested, look up the flight map for XP 410 on Nov 25th.

We were supposed to fly out of Baltimore back to Tweed at 10 am. We boarded the plane and after pushing out, were told a heating element of the engine was not turning on so we had to return to the gate. We waited 2 hours for the 2 mechanics to come and fix the problem, just to be told that the plane was severely overweight and would not be able to land on the short runway at Tweed. Fuel was apparently cheaper down in Baltimore, and they just loaded the plane up (without making calculations regarding the pieces of luggage and souls on board?). We needed an oil truck to take the fuel out, but after waiting for more hours, were told that no oil truck could take the fuel. We proceeded to burn oil at the end of the runway and did loops above the ocean like it was the Indy 500. It was 6 pm when we arrived at Tweed, and I might have returned earlier if I had stayed on the Amtrak that took me to the airport. Over the PA I heard that the unlucky passengers flying to Florida would not receive their checked-in luggage until the next day, presumptively because we burned all that fuel up.

It's nice to be able to fly out so close to home, but they really need to do better maintenance on their fleet of planes. The first delay for safety, I do understand cause I do not want to fly on one engine. The second delay just feels like a mistake that was never addressed, as the pilot "never experienced anything like this in his career".

If you’re trying to minimize transfers and hassle, what might be easiest is to fly into Newark Liberty and then take northeast regional Amtrak train (which has a stop at the airport) straight to New Haven. Amtrak can be pricey though if you don’t book well in advance. Alternatively, fly into LGA or JFK, take bus/cab/subway to Grand Central, and then local Metro North train to New Haven.

East Rock Market for food, Escape New Haven for an Escape Room, Ikea for some aimless wondering (I know I'm in the minority on people that probably enjoy this), IT at Jordan's if you're into ropes courses/etc. (also another great place to aimlessly wonder), Barracuda for Happy Hour, Trevor Wallace at College Street Music Hall Friday Night and Andrew Callahan on Saturday Night for comedy, Trinity for World Cup Matches, and Walker Ice Rink.

WH VA is in west haven on top of a big hill. So if you are riding up that hill to get to work - you’ll be sweaty all day. If you have accommodations somewhere on top of that hill / plateau - you’ll be fine. Depending on where jn new haven the commute would not be too bad - but you will be riding on some very busy streets. Plus you will want to vary your root because some of the areas have crime and you won’t want everyone to know you are like clock work at a certain place every day. There is snow and ice in the winter and rain all four seasons - i wouldn’t want to do it.

I’d say scout out the area and plan your root and be sure that if you are going to be climbing up hills you have access to a shower or that you won’t mind wearing those clothes all day. You’ll need good layering for winter riding.
