Elm city games is a great place to hang out. Lots of board games and a pretty solid community. I also used to drink at east rock brewery when I lived over that way.

Everyone downvotes when people say NH is boring but it kinda is. Most bars ARE full of college kids, and there isn't THAT much to do. It's a TINY fucking city with a lot of potential but not much application. I'm not gay, but there like maybe 2 gay bars I've ever heard of in the entire city. The whole downtown area is like 8 blocks where anything happens, maybe less. Let's be honest about what it is. Don't expect NYC. That being said, you can easily go down to NYC too.

Why does it owe the city anything?

They have two sides--a smaller dog side and a bigger dog side, and it's quite nice.

Will you have a car? If so, the Woodbridge dog park is really nice for running around off-leash. Very nice people and well maintained.

Some New Haven things that get less attention: Music/events: for very local, small-room shows there's The Musical Intervention plus Gather and Neverending books; also check weekly at dailynutmeg and artspapernewhaven. Dogs: Edgewood Park is so under-rated, the dog would love; the small Art scene seems ready to take things to another level- the Independent has an article today on one woman's art community and her plans for a space.

Wait till you eventually move to NYC you'll wish it was 1300. Like most yalies you do your time in NH like jail or jale as I call it update your resume then move to NY. It's an age old tradition

Yeah that's what I thought, East Rock is by no means a low-cost option.

Out of curiosity—how does one find the lower cost options in East rock? I’m also going to be new to the city (moving in Feb), and would absolutely love to live there, but even with a roommate everything is prohibitively expensive right now. On Facebook, Craigslist, Zillow, Trulia, the Yale housing site, anything half decent is over $1300 per room. Agh!

SCSU is the 2nd best New Haven university (unless we're including QU as New Haven, then it's 3rd). So yes, it has its good points.

If you don’t want to be surrounded by undergrads, East Rock is the place to look (especially for lower cost options; great for dogs). There are lots of great restaurants and bars in that neighborhood as well. East Rock Brewery is one of my favorites. In terms of music and events, Yale has a lot of stuff going on - the Yale Rep, for example - but College St Music Hall also has a lot of artists come through (Toads is filled with undergrads). I love the Yale University Art Gallery and British Art Gallery. I’m not super familiar with the queer scene, but I think it’s pretty active (not sure if Partners is still open…)

Your good with the queer section…. As for all the other stuff it’s 1 and done… you’ll be bored after a month.
