Everyone downvotes when people say NH is boring but it kinda is. Most bars ARE full of college kids, and there isn't THAT much to do. It's a TINY fucking city with a lot of potential but not much application. I'm not gay, but there like maybe 2 gay bars I've ever heard of in the entire city. The whole downtown area is like 8 blocks where anything happens, maybe less. Let's be honest about what it is. Don't expect NYC. That being said, you can easily go down to NYC too.

Some New Haven things that get less attention: Music/events: for very local, small-room shows there's The Musical Intervention plus Gather and Neverending books; also check weekly at dailynutmeg and artspapernewhaven. Dogs: Edgewood Park is so under-rated, the dog would love; the small Art scene seems ready to take things to another level- the Independent has an article today on one woman's art community and her plans for a space.

Out of curiosity—how does one find the lower cost options in East rock? I’m also going to be new to the city (moving in Feb), and would absolutely love to live there, but even with a roommate everything is prohibitively expensive right now. On Facebook, Craigslist, Zillow, Trulia, the Yale housing site, anything half decent is over $1300 per room. Agh!

If you don’t want to be surrounded by undergrads, East Rock is the place to look (especially for lower cost options; great for dogs). There are lots of great restaurants and bars in that neighborhood as well. East Rock Brewery is one of my favorites. In terms of music and events, Yale has a lot of stuff going on - the Yale Rep, for example - but College St Music Hall also has a lot of artists come through (Toads is filled with undergrads). I love the Yale University Art Gallery and British Art Gallery. I’m not super familiar with the queer scene, but I think it’s pretty active (not sure if Partners is still open…)
