That’s not a good area, unfortunately. Don’t keep anything in your car of value and be cognizant of your surroundings.

That is a tough area you will need to be very aware of your surroundings.
You can look through the CompStat reports and see the major crimes.
Day time is not too bad in the past I would go to stores around there frequetnly. I go to Kevins Seafood when I travel back to New Haven.

I was confused by the buildings on the right, or east side of state st in this picture… was thinking: weren’t the train tracks there then? But found this much older sanborn map showing much more density than we know today

Just wanna jump into this thread as the owner(s)—Westville General is where I’m pushing more hyper local stuff like NHV hats, keychains, notepads, etc.
Strange Ways has local artists, but not necessarily things that say CT/New Haven. These deadstock Connecticut patches are cool tho! https://www.strange-ways.com/products/vintage-connecticut-patch
PS-Always appreciate the store reccs during gift giving season. 🙏🎁

Actually my brother might know my great grandfather’s route. It might have been up to the Hill and back.

I’d ask my dad but he just died. He grew up on the Hill. I do know that Trolleys were maiming people a lot back then. My great grandfather used to visit a guy who suffered brain damage from a Trolley accident. At the sanitarium in Old Saybrook.

Do you happen to know what route was his? That’s really neat . The story in my family is my grandfather owned an Indian motorcycle and I wish I knew more . Something about a wreck with a trolly. He was ok and I believe it was one of his legs was effected somehow. Needless to say motorcycles were a big NO ,NO as well as anything on Two wheels. My grandfather died B4 I was born & no one really talked about him I guess he was on the shady side.

Waaay better time I think. One can always find pros & cons with then vs now. Just seems like it was more tranquil bck then. I think it would be really cool if they brought the trolleys back. But I’m sure there’s a bucket full of cons that go with bringing trolleys bck.

Fun fact that may interest only me: there are visible remnants of the tracks in the road behind the police department.
