East Rock between Orange/State and Lawrence/Willow is a big destination for a lot of families. The people who live there do a good job of decorating their porches and handing out candy.

I manage a rental and did it on Craigslist. A kind woman from Tennessee video-called the apartment tour and moved all the way here. It worked out.

Which is to say, try to get in touch with the posters and exercise good judgment, whether or not you're using Craigslist.

But yes it's expensive. Try Fairhaven Heights (east of Quinnipiac River), West Haven, or upper Whalley, going towards Westville and Woodbridge. Fairhaven in general is also fine in most spots, but loud and there are kids who try car doors and steal bikes.

You're moving in. There are specific "cons" you will want to know about. Here's my take:

  1. Tweed air traffic is very loud and low-flying. Few times a day.

  2. Prowlers. Kids that walk around, try your car door, and check to see if bicycles are unlocked. Install a motion activated light.

  3. Loud cars. It's part of the vibe.

  4. Places you should be cautious of. AKA welcome to human society.

I've lived on Downing St for six years and I bike to work downtown, shop at C-town, and I love it.
