I just moved here from out of state and had a similar problem. I decided to go through Chelsea Company because they seemed to be the most reputable with lower prices. I will add however, they rack on extra fees for things like parking, AC installation, etc. But altogether still the best option I came across!

So I grew up on public transport. I was raised in New Haven most of my life but did live in East Haven and West Haven too. A bike goes a long way and if the weather isn’t too good, grabs your bike and put it on the bus. You just gotta learn the schedule and work around it.

Not having a car is going to restrict your options outside of New Haven severely, unfortunately. I am not familiar enough with the public transit system to help you on where you could look outside of New Haven.

As far as websites - I would avoid Craigslist entirely. Zillow, Trulia, and apartments.com might be worth checking out, too. If you're looking for roommates, though, the Yale off-campus Facebook group will probably be your best option. You (likely) won't find people looking for roommates on Zillow or Trulia.

Yeah 100%!! And it sucks because the posts seem legit in the beginning until they say that the previous tenant is still occupying the unit and to put in a deposit and fill out the application form to reserve the place. Definitely just stop responding after that.

Thanks for the help!! I won’t have a car and will mainly be relying on the Yale shuttle or other public transport. So I guess I have to look into roommates more seriously. Would you recommend any other websites or is Facebook/Craigslist the best options?

Anything asking for a deposit and banking information up-front is 100% a scam. Do not engage with those listings whatsoever.

Affordable housing will be much easier for you in New Haven if you can find roommates. Otherwise, you might want to look into neighboring towns. West Haven and East Haven are probably your cheapest neighboring options. Hamden, North Haven, and Branford are not quite as cheap as those last two, but are nicer than West and East Haven (avoid the part of Hamden close to New Haven... I would restrict your Hamden search to zip code 06518). You could also look at Wallingford for dirt-cheap electricity rates, but it's the farthest drive of the places I just listed.

From ATX. Flour tortillas and kolaches aren’t anywhere to be found. The coleslaw is awful. But the italian food is next level and I can’t believe I grew up without knowing what an actual deli sandwhich ought to taste like.

You win some you lose some. My family brings a pack of flout from HEB every time they visit.
