You mentioned “one of the colleges”, so not necessarily Yale. Depending upon which one might make a big difference. Any school, other than Yale, you will want your car, so parking becomes a factor.

The places in Hamden are roughly twice the square-footage, so it's a tradeoff with proximity to downtown.

It’s hit or miss but you might have some luck at EBM Vintage on Chapel.
Dwell also has some nice New Haven decor but it’s not cheap (or vintage)!

Eli Whitney school is probably the cheapest (they used to do OC, so check). It's a technical school.
Wilbur Cross has automotive. You could try there. I bet a kid would do it for you for $20 plus the cost of oil and filter.

Depending what neighborhood you live in, you can walk or bike. When i worked downtown, I didn’t drive to work. But i definitely used it for grocery shopping, hiking, and a thousand other things.

I liked September in Bangkok— just tried it last night but I will say their appetizers are much better than the entrees (not to say the entrees are bad just that the appetizers are that good). I really like Il Gabbiano on Long Wharf— been a few times with 4+ each time and all the appetizers/everyone’s entree was yummy
