I was curious as well, and found this link which gives a great explanation.
TL;DR: This is the snow to water ratio. So 5.5:1 means if you took 5.5 inches of snow and melted it, you would get 1 inch of water. "Light and fluffy" snow might be 15:1 or 20:1, whereas very heavy snow would be 10:1 or below.

Hey congratulations on those 100ish days. I know as a recovering addict how hard it is and those first days are that much harder. Keep up the good work.

We deserve way better than WMUR. It's pretty obvious he was making a joke. Are they so desperate that this is what they consider breaking news?

Yeah I’ve noticed that the other side hasn’t had much, but this side has been rowdy. Skiing at valley areas was pretty dang good for a bit. Looks like we’re in the 8-12 range for tomorrow, too.

I'm in the Littleton area and we barely got anything, the schools haven't even really had snow days.

Not the whites proper, but just south of Conway and we’ve been hammered.
The Whites seem like they’ve done great in the last few storms.

I always think it's crazy that the White Mountains have usually been getting the least amount of snowfall/accumulation. I wonder if it's climate change or the topography. I live here and get pissed off when southern NH and Boston get more snow than us.

Thanks for this, so it seems like the snow will start off light and be wet/heavy towards the end?
Also, can you ELI5 the snow ratio thing, is this a snow to rain mixture?
>(low snow ratios of 5.5-9:1)

We've gotten 12+ inches of wet heavy snow a few times already. In Dublin I got 14 inches of cement on January 22.
Like I said, we've gotten enough heavy wet stuff and high winds in the past few months that I doubt there will be significant power issues. My generator is ready in case I'm wrong, though.

Any update on when/if we can get higher-contrast coloring on these? I love the accuracy of the previous ones, but the pastel color scheme is hard for some.

I don’t envy the TV mets on this storm. One of the most challenging forecasts I’ve seen especially for SE NH and around the 495 belt into the Merrimack Valley. Your map looks good though, maybe we’ll get a little better model consensus this evening but it’s looking more like a nowcast event.

I really need to try these, I go to the goodwill in Manch (ok) and Amherst (meh) but I've always wanted to try my luck at the bins.
As thrifting goes, I like the Nashua Savers a lot.

Good point, but if you guys get 12+ of wet heavy snow all bets are off. NWS was really pushing this in there morning discussion.
“Snow is expected to be wet, heavy and dense with a significant snow load factor that will greatly increase the risk for snow damage as totals exceed 4 or more inches. Factor that in with strong NE winds developing later Tuesday morning to especially Tuesday night, the potential for tree and powerline damage will prove a significant hazard, reflected in the Winter Storm Severity Index.”

Bedford is having a meeting today at noon to determine whether or not to push theirs off... I think I will be finding the outcomes out in about 2 hours.

"Apprehensions in the area where the family was found, known as the Swanton Sector, which includes sections of Vermont, New York and New Hampshire, have increased to 1,146 from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2022, from just 136 the year prior. Across the northern border, crossings from Canada into the U.S. have increased from 16,000 to 42,000 over the same time period, according to CBP data."
The numbers are increasing rapidly. Better to start working on the problem now than waiting for it to get worse.

Yep, that's exactly how I would have explained it! Wet bulb temperature is another important factor when considering how sticky it is to trees, power lines, etc.
