Portsmouth is not affordable unless you are a millionaire.

In simple terms in a Mechanical AWD wheels are connected with gears and pulleys. In E-AWD, the AWD is governed by the car's ECU.

In five years they will probably ban gas lawnmowers and snowblowers. Vermont and a few states have already come for gas blowers. Its only a matter of time.

I’m leaning toward a Toyota from what I have been hearing. Currently I have 2.5k set aside and a ~750 credit score, I’m going to likely end up financing. Ideally I don’t want to spend more than 13k in the long-run but it depends on what I find. I saw a few RAV4s around 8-12k but I’m running into issues where they don’t allow financing.

> but if you can't fix it yourself then you're doomed to the long wait list
This seems like a good opportunity for a side-gig for the mechanically inclined. Although most of the small-engine places tend to have shelves, drawers, and cubbies filled with the odd gasket, spring, or other part. Maybe that's the real issue with wait times?

Disagree. I’d argue Dover or Exeter over all 3 of those due to the Amtrak alone.

It's more than possible to live carless or car-light in NH, people are just too attached to their cars to notice or are not willing to look around for a lot of their neighbors, especially those on the lower social economic spectrum, live pretty carless or car-light lifestyles mostly not by choice and mostly we make it harder for them to do so because "public transit will bring Massholes" or "I don't need it so why do it" mentalities.
Out of experience I know for a fact that is possible, I lived in the southwest corner and between Brat in VT and Keene are both livable without cars. I also had a carpenter friend in Brattleboro that between the bus and ebike with trailer would go to most of his jobs on both side of the border.
Portsmouth, Exeter, Newmarket, and the Tri City (Rochester, Somersworth, and Dover) area on the Seacoast, where i live now, has enough public transit and services in their town center that you can make it without a car as well. They will also have the greenway finished up in the next few years and at least Portsmouth is going to be paving and plowing its section of it with some commitment from Hampton it would be possible to bike from Hampton center to urban Portsmouth on the trail alone.
Lebanon-Hanover-White River is another area where its more comfortable to do so.
Then you have your big obvious ones, Manchester, Concord, and Nashua.

What is the difference between E-AWD and AWD?

"I watched this young woman grow up. Her dad died while she was in utero, her mom spent the next couple years severely depressed. Five or six years later mom remarried, it seemed life was back on track until that day when stepdad backed over Timiah's brother, an accident that took his life. Timiah watched in horror from ten feet away, she could never talk about it. Soon after that she watched her world crumble and the family disintegrate, they lost their home, step dad left the family and mom turned to drugs because she could no longer cope with life's chalanges. This girl followed. Not making excuses for her, and I'm sorry for the pain she has caused so many! Just trying to add insight as to why this girl is so broken. Unfortunately, because we do not have the wisdom to help her, she will spend many years in prison. A place where all of us, including Broken Timiah will be safer. Just saying"
A comment from the article you linked.
We desperately need reform, no child could witness that and be ok.
This woman needs intensive psychiatric care, not prison, where her mental health will almost certainly deteriorate, worse than it already is.
The mental health system in New Hampshire is abysmal at best, though.
Just really sad.
Yes, the system absolutely failed her.
ETA:
Show at least some compassion, the comments on concord patch lead me to believe that a lot would willingly sign up to open the valve.
The reason concord in particular has such an issue is that NHH and the prison are located there, and there is absolutely zero aftercare.
Housing prices are through the roof, and there is practically no units, even if you can afford it.
And people ask "why is this such an issue"?
NIMBY's
Edit 2: No, I don't know her

Yeah, anything near downtown Concord, even up towards the high school or over to White Park would be plenty walkable. I lived in downtown Concord for a few years and really enjoyed it.

I always buy CPO from a dealer. Never had an issue in NH or FL. It might cost a little more up front but I haven’t had to fix anything on my last 3 cars other than maintenance/wear & tear (tires, battery, brake pads). What is your approximate budget? Toyota or Honda are usually good.

Hondas are not bad at all. If you compare RAV4 against a CRV, the later has mechanical AWD compared to an E-AWD found in RAV4. In critical condi this system could be a life-saver.

Dover. You can (and probably would prefer to do so, the traffic sucks a lot of the time) walk literally anywhere in town, once you know your way around. I loved it.

I agree with you that it was preventable.
However, without being able to rely on all drivers to act in their or other best interest - driving east bound there are a few roses that are complete blind spots and only once you are almost at the crest, can you see.
There are accident from left turns due to the rise and blind spot- this is what I speak of.
Last night was a fluke, however, in searching for the accident- I discover many accidents and this route gets their fair share.

So, this near head in occurs and some driver decides it’s a great time to speed through. He can’t see the front end of car 1 strewn about and proceeds to shatter every piece of glass, plastic, or any other large part( front passenger quarter panel, bumper from front) in the road. About 1/2 way through, the driver realizes his error and attempts to brake abruptly and then sees car 1 about 10 feet in front of him- he makes it by with a swerve and goes on with his night. I can’t believe this stuff!!

I think there is a lot of ground between “multicultural mecca” and white supremacy. I think most normal and sane NH and New England and American folks are on that ground and can understand it and appreciate it and respect it. White nationalist nazis can’t. And the reason they can’t isn’t because of demographics. It’s because of fear, ignorance, and anger.

Correct, I do a lot of my work and advocacy in the field of transportation. I know what people are doing and how smart phone are contributing to the sharp increase in automotive related crashes, I also know that the pandemic has sped up a lot of bad behavior especially in areas where traffic disappeared and it just coming back, people got used to having free rain over empty roads and copping with the increase in driving again has not come without a cost.
There's a lot of design considerations that have already been vetted through testing and implementation that can do things like this, we just don't use them in the states. This does need to go in tandem with policies reform and there need to be a heck more public will and that is where the problem lies, not necessary on the engineering side.
We know how to do this; a lot of traffic calming and safe street guidelines exist. We just don't do it because of bureaucratic inertia (engineers that might have the knowledge aren't in positions to change 50+ years of DPW/DOT bureaucracy and archaic policies), political will (politicians aren't willing to stake their careers on safety if it means inconveniencing commuters and getting them voted out) and public opinion/will (people just don't like change especially change that in the short term might inconvenience them, traffic is a very complex and fluid topic that has a lot of counter intuitive aspect to it that people might not fully be able to grasp making it a tough sell unless people are already wanting safety improvements on their street).
