I think the expectation of what the movie is trying to be is what people are rating it on. I feel like by the end the movie wasn’t as interesting as it’s concept/premise was attempting to be. The ending was trying to be ambiguous and open ended but based on what happens in the movie I don’t think there’s much interpretation.

I really enjoyed it. It's not the greatest movie ever, but it was original and I liked the performances.

Best part about the movie is you don't have to read Vandermeer's prose.

Top notch lovecraftian sci-fi horror, I don’t understand how some people don’t like the ending because it is thematically perfect

Scary bear 😱
That was worth it alone, but everything else was pretty great, too. Did a great job showing how beautiful, horrifying, and/or intriguing the unknown can be (in this case, mostly horrifying). Made me want to read the books if I ever get around to catching up on my reading list... ... ... lol

Removing the heist scene from the heist plot was an ingenious twist, but the true nature of the story stems out from that device. It's almost an anti-heist movie. We get the typical scenes of rounding the up the gang and going over the plan, but none of those moments really follow the formula.
In Ocean's 11, the planning scenes are primarily used to engage the viewer based on the complex and dangerous logistics of the robbery. Character dynamics are thrown in for comic relief since all the actors are in the scene together, but in Reservoir Dogs, the character work is all there really is. The specifics of the jewelry store plan are good to know so you can make sense of the plot later, but the real thing you take from those scenes is the way the guys react and relate to each other, which sets up all the loyalty/distrust and conflicting father/son dynamics once they finally meet up in the warehouse. Actual heist movies are strong on character but centered around plot. Reservoir Dogs is all about character.

Yeah it was just lacklustre to me. I would have thought it was my bag though but it just fell flat.

Now that you say the topic Western... I don't follow much that genre neither... however "3:10 to Yuma" is a must see film.

Really great.
It’s hard to do New Weird and ambiguous well, without coming off as purposefully obscure for the sake of obscure.
But I never got that feeling watching it.
I also like the fact they totally lifted a horror set piece from a Gene Wolfe book. Lol.

Yeah, that really helped put the audience in a constant state of unease. I believe it was a 2 or 3 day jump?

I adore him for making that video.
The ending absolutely does not matter. It’s not literal. It’s just a big metaphor.

If you want to half hear someone rant about quick takes, but also cover Annihilation pretty well.
Also, has one of my favorite edits - when the enter the shimmer it jump cuts way to far ahead to them getting up from their camp site. It’s such a jarring cut I was almost mad until the main character was also like, “does anyone remember how we got here” was cool how they used the cut to create the same unease that the characters felt.
