There was another miniseries about him called Manhunt that was pretty good where Paul Bettany played Ted. I really enjoyed that one, will be interested to check out Ted and see how the two compare. Manhunt humanized him quite a bit as well.

I'd add Spielberg to the list too. Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List.
All completely different, but they're near perfect

Jonathan Demme. There was nothing in his background to suggest that he was capable of delivering Silence of the Lambs. He was mostly lighthearted comedy or documentary. He blew peoples minds when Silence came out.

There are some weird ass sequels in that list.
Death Note, Dirty Dancing, Toy Story again, Passion of the Christ??

Akira Kurosawa was known primarily for Samurai action/comedy films, but he did a lot of great dramas and even a couple noir films.

I cannot overstate how good The Shining is. I'd only ever seen it secondhand through the memes because I was too young to remember it and it was just a fabulous movie to sit through. Mr Grady in the bathroom still creeps me out.

Reply to comment by agarimoo in I keep end up disliking good films simply because all the characters are sad degenerate fucks and I hate them for it. Is there a trick to liking these kinds of films? by KellyKellogs
For Charlie Babbit:
It was several days of being a vile human being to his brother without any compassion. He didn't just treat his brother like an animal, he spent most of the film berating and bullying him too. I can imagine someone doing that for a moment, maybe even a day, but to look your brother in the eyes and refuse to see his humanity for days on end, that is an irredeemable character flaw.
It was also the language used. If someone used that kind of language to insult to a non-disabled person, I'd tell them to stfu. If someone talked to a disabled person like that, you don't wanna know what people would do to them where I'm from. To use that kind of language is inexcusable and an indicator about his character, not his emotions.
Watching someone treat a disabled person like shit for 1.5 hours and even after their moment of connection was deeply upsetting. I used hyperbole, I don't want to torture him, but I do want to beat him up.
For the suggestion, thanks. If a character is presented as a cunt at the beginning I'll pause the film and try and find a way to connect with them.

Ben Mendelsohn starting to get Alan Rickman vibes.
Actually if they're totally going to reboot HP anyway Mendelson wouldn't be a bad casting for Snape.

Licensing fuckery, pretty much. The IP holders figured they could get more money out of the movie by compartmentalizing each of the dubs as its own licensing deal, and they were probably correct.

Tbh Schindlers List is pretty rewatchable. There is a Hollywood score, some scenes of comedy, and overall a happy ending.
Now you can argue in itself if that is a flaw with the movie(Terry Gilliam thought so) but I guess it depends on taste.

American History X - easily my favourite film of all time but I can only watch it once every couple of years because of the heavy subject matter.

I don’t think so. He’s certainly good at it and has an aesthetic he imparts on his films, but with people like Garland and Villeneuve out there, he’s far from the best at creating atmosphere.

Disney and WB Discovery’s stock prices would crater.
Financiers would pull money from Hollywood.
Life would go on.

I'm a fan of whoever did Shutter Island. The claustrophobic and foreboding atmosphere of that movie was brilliant.

He is good at it but there are others. Tarantino is one. Another director is Chris Nolan who is also controversial like Shamalan because his later work has fallen off.
